Polls just closed in the Brazilian presidential run off. Things are looking messy. Bolsonaro-affiliated mayors sabotaged public transport in at least ten states. São Paulo reportedly has 29% of buses out of service. The Brazilian Supreme Court has just ordered voting hours extended by 2 hours.

I spelled out "superpower suicide" in this essay from May 2026. Empires have risen and failed before, but to my knowledge no state has ever chosen to kill its own power, and succeeded with such rapidity. snyder.substack.com/p/on-superpo...

Tim Snyder: The term that I came up with… is superpower suicide. I just can’t see an example of a major country losing so much power so quickly as the United States under Trump. We’ve encouraged our enemies and we’ve made our allies not trust us.

I'm not sure if y'all saw a CNN report on how the US had almost started WW3 with China based on fabricated information generated by a chatbot, claiming that a Chinese vessel was carrying components of nuclear weapons. That was an "existential threat" to humanity www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Around 40% of the world's dirty money, proceeds of corruption and crime, is laundered through the UK, its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories. Successive govts promise new laws and enforcement but they make little impact. Why do govts continue to fail? Watch the Minister's reply.

I’m not scared, I’m angry. My sites still work, as I have spent a lot of time dealing with the issue (especially last week when scrapers started to overload the server). I wouldn’t even care about them scraping (for my specific things) if they had any indication of community, care or consideration

Carl T. Bergstrom@carlbergstrom.com

When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

Wow

To give you a sense of perspective, Google, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle issued more bonds between 2023 and 2026 than they did in the nearly fifteen years between 2008 and 2022 - with the vast majority (over $200bn) in the last nine months. www.wheresyoured.at/premium-the-...

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

Out of my entire computer science course Queuing theory stuck with me the most. It stuck with me because it can be proven using fairly simple mathematical probability models that queue lengths grow exponentially with processor busyness regardless of processing time or inter arrival time.

Mark Levison@mlevison.bsky.social

A hospital at 100% bed capacity can't absorb demand, faster triage barely helps. Same trap when people are kept maximally busy: no slack means no ability to adapt or innovate. "No resource idle" is the biggest generator of waste, Eli Goldratt.

That’s quite a surprising and counterintuitive result and has implications across almost every aspect of management. Even if managers understand how systems behave when they get busy, it *looks bad* that systems aren’t busy so the system tends toward high busyness.

Is this just business as usual in politics? No. Approval rates of federal disaster aid requests were about the same regardless of the state and did not vary much with the party of the President. This graph powerfully conveys the scale of the partisan discrimination now.
