The Red Wall is a myth, a spook story that British politicians must worship at the altar of: do what I tell you or the Red Wall will get you. It is made up. It has long since lost contact with its original definition. It encourages people to confuse places and people. It is past its sell by date.

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

And that plan has to be sustainable in the long term, which means getting us off the energy roller coaster. Swapping oil and gas for electricity should be a top national priority, for the economy, not just the climate

And Burnham's critique of this argument is actually correct. When you pull back the state you end up with an *abundance* of what the market wants to supply (gas power, high value property, nuclear waste) and a *scarcity* of what you need (affordable housing, clean power, a decent environment).

Elon Musk's radicalisation machine is the main reason why civil war talk is a thing in Britain. Without it, Lowe would be a nonentity: there's no organic demand for Restore's fascism; It's been manufactured, and now "what needs to happen will be incredibly painful" is in the high single digits.

Thank you Ian. You never get time to say everything you intended to. I should have noted that what Trump considers pressure tactics, like suspending intel on Russian missile launches or messing with Starlink, is costing lives of civilians in Ukraine. That won’t be forgotten.

Wise words from @lordrickettsp.bsky.social on BBC R4 Today after Trump’s abandonment of Ukraine: UK gov’t has to start a conversation with the people about the threats from Russia & what it means for us. Europe can’t keep hoping that life will return to normal, as long as Trump & Putin are in power.

David Gooda reposted

We still have many friends in the US, but we shd certainly reduce our dependency. Trump has been elected twice: that's a warning that despite the intelligence & military ties we have, we shdn't rely on the US govt doing the right thing in future. We & the rest of NATO & Ukraine are in the same boat.

curbarthedog.bsky.social@curbarthedog.bsky.social

I would go further and say we need to discuss what our relationship is not just with Europe, but also have an honest and frank discussion about the US relationship. They are not our friends, we do not have a special relationship, they could be our enemy at any time
