It never ceases to amaze me that the tech industry's explicit argument for AI uptake is "we have built a tool for people who are stupid, lazy, and kind of shitty at being human".

It's the people and politics that are against being a signatory to the ECHR that proves the need to be a signatory to the ECHR.

You actually do not want your teachers, nurses, doctors, etc., to be authentic while they are in positions of responsibilty and care for other people. I have to control and hide my emotions a lot. Everyone does. It's called growing up.

a related observation--one recently reinforced via personal experience--is that when your organization is not accountable to a mass public, but rather to the pocketbooks of wealthy donors, you start shedding expertise and accruing cranks and kooks and buffoons

It was @tomandlorenzo.bsky.social who pointed out how one of the biggest things you see on early Drag Race is drag queens talking about familial rejection, and recent queens talk about their parents helping with their drag pageants as teenagers. And that show is 17 years old.

And now the media heavyweights weigh in. @danagoldstein.bsky.social does a thorough job reporting on the ed-tech ambitions of Alpha School, and whether existing claims about its effectiveness withstand scrutiny (answer: no). Appreciate the nod to my reporting on the boot camp too. But...

Shapiro assumes that the "crime" being condemned here is violating the norm of filial piety, rather than tacitly endorsing sexual abuse, because that's what he cares about what he assumes everybody else cares about too.

I'm not entirely sure tbh but the first one I can remember is Batman Forever

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

Got weirdly scared by the prospect of seeing Carrey turn into the Riddler, which I anticipated being traumatic. I was... kind of right? And also I was 6

And finally keeping at it, year-in, year-out demands not ironic detachment but sincere, even 'cringe,' commitment - of the kind that feels like vulnerability. It is not enough to be angry all the time, you must also be grieved and sorrowful and even sometimes joyous too.

It is, fundamentally, an exercise of choosing the lesser evil, over and over and over again, so that the total amount of evil in the system decreases over time. And you must keep doing it, because - since evil is easy - good is easily reversed.

Actually, positive change is slow, difficult and incremental by nature. Destroying is fast, building is slow. It is easy to bring misery to people - any idiot can do it, as Trump shows - but very hard to improve their conditions. Building a better society is slow, careful, patient work.

I do not claim that you can pour everything into the gap between Trump on the one hand and Biden/Harris on the other, but into that chasm nevertheless fit a great many lives lost or ruined. It turns out there really was a difference!

Bart Crisp reposted

Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!

youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

Like, someone should explain to Americans that - no - prices will not go down, prices will go up but by less and by the same amount wages go up, and someone should explain the French that - no - you cannot retire at 60 when life expectancy is 83 and fertility rates are below population replacement.

The fact that Western publics are unreasonably mad at objective trade-offs and tolerable living standards (and have to make up new words to describe a nebulous “crisis”) is bad because it generates real crises (avoiding trade-offs causes debt crises, grievance politics cause democratic crises).

“It’s real, even if it doesn’t show up in charts.” How do you know it’s real, then? How do you know that you’re not simply insisting on a reality you prefer, in the face of evidence? How would you support your view? Is it falsifiable, at all? How are you any different from MAGA in this respect?

the right doesn't reject empathy entirely, they selectively deploy it. when a white person is murdered by an immigrant, for example, they will call upon your empathy. but empathy directed at their enemies is cast aside as toxic.

Matt Gabriele@profgabriele.com

are those separate things though? that rejection of empathy/ embrace of cruelty is part of their intellectual worldview. goes along with the "how dare my kids reject me" thing because it's about domination.

Bart Crisp reposted

the idea that empathy is dangerous has been permeating right-wing spaces for a while, but it's not an actual element of their ideology as much as it's a defense mechanism against confronting the reality of their cruelty

Harry Potter becoming a right wing bizarro-Bible, a lens through which they are forced to pass all their vapid beliefs to sway people whose imaginative development was so colonized by it, is somehow both very demeaning and very fitting.
