For all you plastic Israeli politics fans: Politics in Israel are based on parliamentary democracy. The Prime Minister of Israel is the head of government and leader of a multi-party system. Politics in Israel is dominated by Zionist parties. They traditionally fall into three camps, the first...

The Knesset only needs to vote for a new PM by a majority of members who actually cast a vote, so some anti Netanyahu parties’ promises not to go into coalition with them should be taken either a pinch of salt

Not to open oneself up to accusations of being right-wing, but a minimum wage of nearly £30,000 a year and a higher rate tax bracket of £50,000 does look a little off

I generally go against the grain on cars for this place; I think it's fine if you treat it as a status symbol, if you have don't complain "you're skint" then you can spend what you want on a car etc But there's a line which goes from "this is an expense I'm happy to pay" to just financial ineptness

This post is unavailable.

They key here is complaints. Spending over half your salary on an expensive car is a choice you have made, you've prioritised your finances into making that choice and that's fine - but it also annuls your right to cry "poor me" if you then can't spend money on other things.

As someone who's owned several classics, and leased new cars, I've never once complained about that choice that I've made because, well, that's what I like to spend my money on and that is entirely my choice and priorities. If I had to downgrade to a banger then I would.

🚨BREAKING: Finland’s President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Støre held a joint call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin today as part of international efforts to secure an end to the war in Ukraine. Full story: www.politico.eu/article/lead...

First one to say I would like broader fiscal reform, but the Tories aren't calling for that. In fact I'm not sure what they're calling for and neither do they - beyond just being contrarian for the sake of it. And even if the public feels it's not enough, they'll never be opposed to these measures.

Their only fiscal argument is that cutting public spending- or rather, just welfare spending- will simultaneously reduce the deficit, pay for 3% GDP in defence, give headroom for tax cuts, reduce inflation, pay for every other part of public spending.

Seems bonkers to me that whenever tax loopholes or traps, business rates, even tax avoidance/evasion are brought up, the immediate political reaction is to pledge to fix that single issue rather than look at the wider clusterfuck of a system.

We’re long overdue a Chancellor who takes tax reform seriously

Agree with this. In an era of focus groups running politics as well, I'd bet a million that in a choice to voters between the current system which costs individuals and taxpayers billions collectively, and changing that so that we all pay a little more fairly... well, I don't want to be too cynical.

Hungary showed that a few months ago, Serbia have shown that now. Despite whatever comes next it does give people hope, especially in younger democracies which emerged from authoritarian regimes. A stark contrast perhaps to what we will see from other countries in Western Europe the next 12 months

Fwiw, almost contradicting myself, but I also think us in Western Europe cannot directly make comparisons, or worse apply your own thoughts on the wants and desires of what those elsewhere have achieved here.

Really shows that no matter how many roadblocks, influence and corruption autocrats put up they cannot stop the sheer power of votes, at least not without becoming completely authoritarian.
