CSS-Tricks has a new owner! Yes, I've got the keys to the castle, so to speak. And, even after 12 years of working on the site, I'll admit I'm a little overwhelmed and nervous about that. https://css-tricks.com/css-tricks-has-a-new-owner/

Saw yet another post where someone mentions em dashes as a dead giveaway for AI โ€” this is a lazy half-truth at best. 2 things: 1. It's trivially easy to add "don't use em dashes" to a prompt โ€” a lot of people do this. 2. Real humans use em dashes โ€” where do you think AI learned it from?

๐Ÿš€ Container style queries are baseline; New attr() capabilities are nearly there. Neat apart, but together they change how we can wire up components. Practice will make perfect, and I still need to rewire my brain for this combo. So, time to start that rewire. utilitybend.com/blog/contain...

Someone used my portfolio site as inspiration for theirs. I can tell because they copy/pasted the "about me" verbatim, including the name of my site ๐Ÿ˜†

Hey everyone! If you're thinking about ordering Domino's... maybe don't. I made the mistake of ordering through the app. Apparently I'm in their rewards program now and they send me marketing emails.

I tell the chat bot I want to unsubscribe. It tells me I need to accept terms and conditions first before talking to me. Nah, I don't trust Domino's anymore, I'm not doing that.

So I just marked Domino's as spam and blocked. TLDR: Domino's will send you spam and say you can't unsubscribe. Very uncool.

Fine, just unsubscribe. Except: "By enrolling in Domino's Rewards, you agree to receive emails related to the status of your account and points total. Members may not unsubscribe from these emails. Members can opt out of Domino's Rewards and associated emails by visiting dominos.com/rewards ."

They're not important status updates. They're marketing emails. So I go to that link to opt out. There is nowhere to opt out. So I click on a link to email customer service. It takes me instead to a chat bot.

TIL: JavaScript (basically) has a built-in coordinate distance function. const distance = Math.hypot(x2 - x1, y2 - y1) Also works for 3+ dimensions (just add more params).

If the excessively animated doodles on the Chrome new tab page annoy you too: - Go to chrome://flags - Search for "doodle" - Disable

I just learned that (US) TSA will accept an expired passport / real ID driver's license for domestic flights, up to 2 years after expiration. Just sharing in case it saves others from the stress I just had.

This reminds me of Houdini and the CSS paint API that let you put JS in CSS to do all sorts of amazing and/or terrible things. I was super excited about it for a while. Chrome supports it, but it seems pretty dead now for better or worse.

I have a vague worry that, as we put more and more computation into CSS, web devs are going to end up with performance issues that are difficult to trace to their source compared to JS solutions. The answer is to surface this in DevTools I guess.

How much do you use semicolons in JavaScript? I use them religiously, even if I don't need to. I think of them as little hugs at the end of a line of code. But a lot of folks don't ๐Ÿคท

Been seeing a lot of "Gemini can't count letters in words" posts lately. AI opinions aside... why is this happening? Like, actually? Wouldn't it be trivial to whip up a skill or MCP or whatever to answer these questions? Genuinely curious.

It is the year 2034. Chrome has switched to a micro-release cadence. In the time it took you to read this, 7 new versions of Chrome have been released.

I kinda miss PHP sometimes. It was the second server side language I ever learned (after Perl lol). Had one of those obnoxiously thick PHP "bible" books, back when that was a thing.

I tried to like Fireworks back in the day. Never clicked for me.

In April 1998, Macromedia released the Macromedia Fireworks 1.0 graphics program. The program was able to work with both vector and bitmap graphics and was designed specially for web designers. #WebDesignHistory

We stopped saying "HTML5" and "CSS3" because these terms are outdated. The web doesn't drop major versions, it constantly evolves. But I wonder how many resumes get passed on because they don't contain those exact strings. Some recruiter is out there saying "oh, they only know CSS, not CSS3". ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Anyone here done an extended Amtrack trip? Curious what your experience was. I like the idea of taking a train cross country, but could see it being either amazing or awful.

Sometimes I feel like quitting web development and joining my brother-in-law on the ranch. At least cows don't suddenly upgrade to version 5.0 and break the entire farm because the geese aren't on 3.2.4 yet.
