Anyone here done an extended Amtrack trip? Curious what your experience was. I like the idea of taking a train cross country, but could see it being either amazing or awful.

I know it's not *extended*, but I enjoyed the 8-hour Portland-Vancouver trip (as opposed to a 5-hour drive or 50-minute flight) when I travelled between those cities frequently. It was civilised and comfortable, as long as you're not in a rush and do it for the journey, not just to get from A to B.
