Josh Mark just authored a terrific piece about Chicago’s bizarre system of putting 50 mini mayors in charge of infrastructure procurement for each of their districts. With an equal budget! citythatworks.substack.com/p/the-city-d...

"Also if you do anything to lower property value, even if that will be good for delivering on my demand for lower property taxes, you are disadvantaging me, so don't build apartments near me ever" "hey all the kids grew up why is school enrollment sagging" "what do you mean close the school"

Imagine if instead of regulating drone risks the normal way (which we did), we instead paid weird bloggers lots of money to worry about superintelligent dogs sprouting thumbs and using drones to kill us. This is pretty much how the US is approaching AI risks and regulations. My latest:

existential risk from AI is Srs Business 🤡
Almost the entire US technology policy space has been taken over by rich funders and consultants who genuinely believe the below wackadoodle sci-fi AI scenario is extremely likely, and that preventing it is the most important thing we could be doing right now. www.verysane.ai/p/ai-safety-...

Right now, WAY too many resources and way too much attention are going to largely silly Hypothetical Futuristic AI Doom Scenarios - because that's what the AI Millenarian Death Cult cares about - instead of actual, right-now, AI harms. And they've been getting away with it for too long.

if you ever wonder how Americans became the richest major country on the planet but most of us still feel so poor, looking at what we spend on cars — not just directly but in tax money for infrastructure and space in the built environment — is the answer.
Great reminder that the ongoing and intensifying American affordability crisis cannot be solved without major land-use changes (ending sprawl, accelerating infill development at scale) that enable people to ditch their cars and access cheaper/more sustainable mobility modes
