highly recommend to @chaosgreml.in's reading this wonderful piece about building coalition

Bryan (they/them)@chaosgreml.in

Thanks so much to @rpg.actor for joining me for my read of "Coalition Politics: Turning the Century"! I hope you'll watch the video, because I think this message is crucial for folks on here to listen to & learn from if we are to try & make the open social web something durable & transformative.

just found out recently that my handle @deepfates.com.deepfates.com.deepfates.com.deepfates.com.deepfates.com takes up a quarter of a bluesky Post limit because the whole text is included. So if I make it four times longer, no one can ever mention me?

We have a hard time conceptualizing the difference between a "I want to code this in my spare time and make something that's fun for me and others" or "I want to build a community project" or "I want to build a product" or "I want to build a startup" and it fucks us all up at many different levels

exploring this idea of guided internet walks great for real-time events but also could record tours that people follow but also can wander on their own and return to it i feel like there must have been prior versions of this idea made. anything come to mind?

AANYWAY, Chris and I are able to do this because we’ve been graciously sponsored by @ngerakines.me and the folks at the AT Protocol Community Fund, which includes Nick, @knowtheory.net, and @bmann.ca! We’ve also got a VERY cool item from @rpg.actor for folks who we connect with at events!

I am curious to hear other peoples thoughts on how you would pitch the atmosphere/atproto in this setting?

Okay frick it, I'm announcing the project I've been working on. It's called Reams, a markdown editor that syncs over atproto spaces. It works offline, doesn't require a login, and has a bunch of features packed in. Try it at reams.ink, install the PWA for the best experience!

It is becoming increasingly apparent that societies must create conditions to stop being merely spectators (and exploitation objects) of digitalisation. Instead of allowing it to further concentrate wealth, influence, and surveillance, open corporate silos and simultaneously build public capacity.

Very excited to see, I get a feeling we'll be see many more rich embeds popping up across bluesky clients! The Blacksky team did a great job progressively enhancing the embed for this, which is to say if another bluesky client doesn't support it, it falls back to a link embed.

Blacksky Algorithms@blackskyweb.xyz

Introducing Discussions - a new way to have conversations on Blacksky 🗣️ Now you can create a dynamic poll right from the post composer in the app to ask questions, get feedback, or to build community around any and every topic you find interesting.

To reduce the dependence on apps manually parsing URLs, I wonder if `app.bsky.embed.recordWithMedia` to include the AT URI intended to be embedded and a fallback to other media if the client doesn't support it. Looks like it hasn't been used at all!

Hoping to share some writing that dives deeper into this soon, but the angle for shifting the overton window that I find compelling is popularizing the idea of Account Service Providers, streamline the infrastructure to make it happen, and advocate for laws/regulation to sustain it.

Jason Lengstorf@jason.energy

I was thinking about atproto more and had a thought: no one needs to know or care about the protocol. we just need to normalize the idea that it’s bonkers to allow any company to own part of your identity it’s like how you used to lose your phone number if you switched carriers. that sucked

Yes, my take is that Bluesky PBC isn't a social media company, they're a dev infrastructure company that happens to be dogfooding their infra by building a clone of twitter. The priority is to make money by selling infra that will power the social internet, not from the bluesky app becoming big.

@ricardo.bsky.social talked about this too, most atmospheric apps are going to be ground-up, tasteful businesses not startups. But atmospheric infrastructure has a path to receive startup-level investing because the speculative value can be huge.

A decentralized protocol upends everything we know about building for the internet, including how to build a business. @ricardo.bsky.social has some insights on the way forward. atproto.com/off-protocol...

plot twist, if it happens they will also make money selling handles

Toni Schneider@toni.bsky.team

A little scoop before Oct 7, when ICANN publishes 1,000+ applications for new top-level domains: one of them is .bsky! It's a long road (18 to 24 months), but if it goes through, handles like alice.bsky become possible.

the most interesting (and under-explored) design spaces to me right now are: "structured" public conversation (meaning scope/locality but still public) flexible spectrum of visibility but usable. Livejournal was the best at this IMO

If Bluesky PBC is looking to disrupt the hegemonic power of social media platforms, then the way to do that is to make it really cheap to make all types of digital social spaces. that increases the demand to sell infra to power these spaces. At the scale of internet that's a huge market...

There's a reason Toni became the CEO, Wordpress is a similar business and ecosystem, although it can't be overstated enough how strikingly different of a place the internet is today.

Marques mentioned their trust and safety is: - you can only A/B test multiple videos on the initial publish - using a model to rank similarity of the different videos and that opaque score that determines if you can publish them.

the playbook for most digital platforms will continue to be gain adoption via network effects and integrations from open protocols, then lock things down by removing open protocols.

Reddit announced they are winding down RSS feeds: "Because RSS is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse, we’ll stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 while preserving moderation workflows that depend on it through supported alternatives." Just another silo.

It's worth noting that technological mysticism isn't specific to the computer or AI. It's a continuation of a much deeper zeitgeist that Leo Marx calls the technological sublime, which is deeply interwoven in to the founding and history of America.

Pavel@spavel.bsky.social

The idea of a "tech industry" has always relied on "computer" being a special kind of medium, akin to alchemy. And if tech demands to be king, AI hype has now elevated LLMs to a king of kings. But the solipsism has hit a dead end. The only way forward is to recognize that computers are not special.
