Join us! Join us! I have a bad case of The Busy™, but if by some miracle I can, I plan to stream later today and try doing a collective brainstorm of talks/topics we can give non-devs that ask "but what would I even talk about at a tech conference" (not a tech conference). If you have thoughts 👀👇

I deeply believe "for something" >>> "against something" in most things (advice included), so I need to work to flip these. But overall that kind of talks, while they may appear to be about other groups, still center developers and topics they care about or what they need to do. I want more!!!

Like what talks do we give when we think as if other groups here have as much agency as devs do, and as much need for guidance and perspective-shift, and just being spoken to like they're at the center of this thing too (because they are)? What atmosphere talk would you give at a writers conference?

I'm not going to be directly choosing talks although I'm in the content committee. But what I'd like to see from non-devs talks is: - not (just) "here's how you get people like us in the atmosphere" - not (just) "here's what's currently being done wrong" - not (just) "software thing for non-devs"

let's just do all the cves at once, so we can patch all our stuff in one go

ok so, I did say I would show off something I did so time for a 2AM preview: - this is my personal site (in Astro) - in dev mode, I have a toolbar to login to my Atmosphere account - it gives me info about AtProto records on my pages - and lets me publish my posts to my standard site publications

"Ms Boba, it's been a while! Surely you haven't just finished THE FIRST ONE OF THESE!" ok, in my defense, I may have written the ultimate treatise on lexicon extension patterns: discourse.atmosphere.community/t/extending-...

ok i slept like shit which is when I give in to the lure of "maybe I can just write code for 5 minutes before doing these 20 more important things I don't love as much" so let's make a pact: for each of these I check out, I'm going to tell you (quickly!) about one cool side thing I'm working on

Another way that may help people understand why I'm so adamant and passionate about this topic: did we all have bad experiences with mods? Yes! Are our communities better when we normalize rhetoric against moderators/community managers? Fuck no! It kills our communities—even stops them being born.

Ms Boba (rebuilding community era)@essentialrandom.bsky.social

Oh, for sure! And it's everywhere, so much of our communities implode because of it! Someone in my server did the same thing about "moderators", and it (luckily) led to a very enlightening conversation about the role of moderators in communities. That's empowering! Not "ahah, so true, fuck mods".

"Actually if you make a software project in your spare time and put it out in the world for people to use, people have a right to see you as a service provider and relate to you like you owe them the service rather than as someone who's giving generously to them" what if not though

And with this, we reach back to the beginning of the rant: you have the right to have software you write or run just something you like to do in your spare time, and "provide it as is without any express or implied customer relationship or service". It helps everyone when we let ourselves do that!

Ms Boba (rebuilding community era)@essentialrandom.bsky.social

We have a hard time conceptualizing the difference between a "I want to code this in my spare time and make something that's fun for me and others" or "I want to build a community project" or "I want to build a product" or "I want to build a startup" and it fucks us all up at many different levels

So many people see how moderators get treated in servers and decide they cannot start communities because they could never live up to expectations. Or they do and set themselves up to fail by catering to people who see them as enemies, not as people generously offering their time. And we let it!

"But what did they expect? That's how it is when you are a mod!" but what if—hear me out—it wasn't? What if we insisted that folks are human and led with empathy in tense moments AND outside them, when we talk about the dynamics? There'd still be bad instances, of course! And it'd still be better!

Gonna make myself a sign to tap then I'm going to go work with fandom friends on some really cool projects to let people put their fanfics/writing/comics etc. on their own personal sites*. You know, like I too have done for decades, alongside software projects. *While keeping them on AtProto, ofc 👀

Or the idea that devs aren't creative! That Open Source devs look a specific way, that there aren't Open Source devs who do theater, and composing, and art, and poetry, and fanfiction writing, and sewing, and making, and and and! These are all things I know devs who do! Why would they not?

I know people think that continuing the "I'm just a stupid dev who doesn't understand how the world works 🤪" is welcoming and inclusive, but it's not. What empowers people is all of us respecting each other and the unique facets we all bring. Empowering should not be done by insulting yourself.

Once people realize that there's not as much of a barrier as they've been led to believe by institutions who prey on anger, they approach tech with more curiosity, they see its purpose differently, and they can make better choices for themselves without being tied to saviors or "thought leaders".

We really don't need to put artificial barriers between devs&public, devs&creatives. Resist the urge to buy into it! Resist the urge to equate listening and taking criticism with accepting moving goalposts, rhetoric, and half-truths that take empowerment *away* from you. People are not corporations.

And again, what kills me is we've been conditioned (both as developers and adjacent folks) to just let this rhetoric pass! To continue being like "no it's fair cause I know people are angry and need a target". But it's! Not! Helpful! It's not helpful to them, it's not helpful to the ecosystem.

Some of the best changes I've seen in non-dev spaces I led have come from taking this anti-[x] rhetoric away from people by directly challenging it, which leaves space for people to build a view of technology as it actually works. And then, with that vitriol out of the way, the conversation morphs.

It is incredible how people will praise the hell out of platforms like AO3, or use Open Source software built to do art or 3d modeling or writing, or add gallery tools made to showcase art to their own sites, or the many things we enable, then turn around and think devs don't use those!
