My posts are split between "decline and fall of western civilization" and nonsense. Fair warning: nonsense always gets the bigger reaction. Never even close. He/him.

In "Peanuts," Linus first mentioned the Great Pumpkin on October 26, 1959, creating what would go on to become an indelible cultural icon. Here’s that strip, followed by the rest of that week’s dailies:

Unbelievable loss. An amazing talent, and just a really, really good person. www.instagram.com/p/De8RFy4pyov/

The PC that I write this with, the Internet protocol that sends the words and pictures out, the fiber optic network that brings it to the house at ludicrous speed. None of these things existed in any meaningful way when I was born. Consequences popped up, but holy cow, what benefits.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Hmm. Color me unsurprised. “When you ask a language model to tell you a story, they all tend to write the exact same one,” says Cornell doctoral student Sil Hamilton. “You think you’re getting a unique story, but at scale it’s the same thing over and over again.”

It is madness The US (and Europe) are weakening Ukraine’s position at the very moment Russia’s own capacity to sustain the war is coming under increasing strain This is now the greatest danger for Ukraine. And it is happening just as Putin is running out of options of his own

While Republicans repeatedly claim their major tax bill helped most Americans, the data that would confirm that claim was scheduled to be released in July, and then updated again in September. But the agency hasn’t published any of it, according to Politico. www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

The annoying: Sam’s Club is apparently using AI to create official product pics. The horror: AI made Little Debbie Oatmeal Crème Pies into tacos. 😱 (Hat tip to Reddit. Verified in Sam’s app. This is image 9 of product.)

But then comes Dubner's conversation with the co-founder of Inception Point AI, a company that makes automated podcasts..in BULK. Listening to her describe her business made my gorge rise. 15k shows with only *11* humans involved. She's not the Devil, but she damn sure has him on speed dial.

It's worth mentioning that Inception Point AI changed its name (and supposedly pivoted to a different (although still AI-centric) set of services) before this episode even finished production, which is one of those necessary reminders that the present moment isn't the eternal moment.

In the 1985 Doctor Who serial Vengeance on Varos, an authoritarian regime run by a weak man keeps the downtrodden population in line by broadcasting public executions to distract from the fact that it has tanked the economy through a combination of incompetence, arrogance and institutional cruelty.

On the one hand, another card for the "AI is making the world demonstrably worse in every possible way" deck. And yet, very convenient that what's choking out the economy is NOT the war that the administration was goaded into to starting.

Federal Reserve officials are increasingly pointing to “surging AI-related investments,” alongside higher prices for crude oil and fuel due to the war in Iran, rather than tariffs to explain why the prices of goods keep rising.
