Hi all! I figured it's time to do an introduction post.
I'm a freelance editor. You may have seen my work in things like Qualia the Purple, Otonari Complex, The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, and Reborn to Master the Blade, to name a few.

Everything about this upcoming documentary sounds so much more compelling than what Walter Isaacson wrote about in his biography.

Whenever I see someone try to point out that AI is just a tool for efficiency and they try to compare that to a spellchecker or something that quickly lets you search for something in a document (like a reg ex find and replace), I have to remind myself that they're probably arguing in bad faith.
AND EVEN THEN, a study found that one ethical concern is that AI neuroimaging is still going to be subject to bias.

I think at the end of the day, it's a classic consideration of needing to ask ourselves is a tool we're using making the decisions for us, or are we molding ourselves around the tool? Who is it serving?
Who does generative AI really benefit? Seems like all it does is encourage slop.
Whenever I see someone try to point out that AI is just a tool for efficiency and they try to compare that to a spellchecker or something that quickly lets you search for something in a document (like a reg ex find and replace), I have to remind myself that they're probably arguing in bad faith.
The tools I use help me find things faster, and then I can evaluate each instance to see if something like "lie vs. lay" was used correctly in the sentence.
Everything is contextual, and *if you know your stuff,* you will always be better than a machine.
It's the same thing I see used in some medical contexts. I know there are some models out there that can more quickly flag issues in something like a brain scan (and they'll have more false positives) to which they draw attention for a radiologist to further interpret.
Whenever I see someone try to point out that AI is just a tool for efficiency and they try to compare that to a spellchecker or something that quickly lets you search for something in a document (like a reg ex find and replace), I have to remind myself that they're probably arguing in bad faith.
It is not worth it to argue with them, because they went to their conclusion first and are working backward from there to find their reasoning to convince themselves that their usage of AI for writing or editing is okay.
The tools we're using for more precise searches aren't making the decisions.
"the left wants you to learn the violent and unethical history of this country so you hate yourself!"
is... is your perception of your own worth based on how you feel about the country where you were randomly born? I'm so sorry, man, I hope you learn to love yourself a bit more
when someone is revealed to have done racist things or behaved in a racist way, actively, responding โthat person is not A Racistโ isnโt appropriate.
racism is something you do. if you think of people as โa racistโ or โnot a racistโ, you donโt actually know what youโre talking about. itโs a tell.
There are aspects of Anime NYC I really enjoy. A lot of my favorite artists attend, it's local to me so I don't need a hotel, a lot of colleagues attend so I can catch up with people and network with people new to me...
but man, it has felt overwhelmingly more corporate every single year.
I missed it this year due to being ill, and I'll likely still go next year assuming I continue to get a pro badge, but it's become a con I don't actually recommend a lot of people attend unless they're going for work and/or local.
It feels weird that there was celebration of Manga Million--a project where Shueisha is trying to spend as little money as possible to get translations of manga--at an awards ceremony celebrating the work of translators and everyone working on manga...
I'm also unsure of how such a project is even possible without cutting out translators from the translating part and relying on machines, but I don't have any conclusive proof about that
This is what data center developers are saying all across Michigan It's condescending and it's going over like a lead balloon.ย
Michiganders don't need some California billionaires telling us what to do, and we aren't buying their false promises.
OUT NOW from J-Novel Club: "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall"
Actor-turned-idol Eiri has spent more than a decade hiding his feelings for genius photographer Shoui. But when Shoui replaces him with a new muse, Eiri must finally face his worst fearsโฆ bit.ly/4xdSBR8
J-Novel Club has announced at Anime NYC that theyโve licensed for their J-Novel Knight imprint Daizu Konaka & Ryou Mizukaneโs
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Who Ate the Poisoned Apple, Core and All?
This industry, these awards, these conventions would not exist without the underpaid freelancers working 80-hour weeks, and I have deep respect for Jan using her moment in the spotlight to call out the poor working conditions that her and her colleagues are subjected to
LRT: thereโs a reason everyone who works in Japanese media localization is rallying around Janโs statement here. Anime, manga, and games are seemingly bigger than ever and none of the creatives involved in getting that media into English are making any money.
So, How Does The Green Work, Anyway???
Working on the lettering (English text) for The Guy She Was Interested Wasnโt A Guy At All has been an interesting experience. I primarily work in black and white manga, or on rare occasions, full color.
I wanted to go to the Manga Awards so badly this year, primarily to cheer on Tiina, who has been pushing herself so hard forever, but particularly when starting at Kana. The Billy Bat license was an amazing grab, and she's worked hard on it (as has the whole team!)
I was only able to get a ticket thanks to her and others in the industry vouching for me, and if I didn't have covid right now, I'd be there toasting. So go toast her for me tonight at the industry party ๐
I have huge admiration for Jan for using this opportunity to speak up for all freelancers. This award is richly deserved on so many levels. Congratulations and thanks to her.
Jan is one of the best, and even better--the courage to tell clients to their faces in-person that they owe us better! Manga and light novels are some of the worst paid gigs, and sometimes it takes us 2 months to even get paid.

WE GOT A LETTER FROM MAMDANI
CAN YOU BELIEVE
We are honored to have received this welcome letter from @nycmayor! Anime NYC starts TODAY!
I usually go to Anime NYC every year, but I have to miss it this time so that I don't get everyone around me sick. Have a great time, everyone! I miss you!
Also crossing my fingers for Billy Bat at tonight's manga awards!!!
I 100% have not changed a single goddamn thing about how I write here in the age of "AI." I write how I write. If the "AI" writes anything like how I write, it's because it stole from me. I'm gonna use any punctuation I like, and if it looks "AI"ish to you, you can go fuck yourself.
Authors and journalists are doing more first-person (hello 2010s blogging) and embracing "mistakes" in writing to prove they're not chatbots. There's even an โanti-Grammarly" app that leaves in typos and signs off "sent from my iPhone" to create more authenticity: www.wired.com/story/more-t...
If you're on psychatric meds, there's a pretty good chance you're also dealing with some extra heat intolerance, don't overexert yourself when there's a heat wave!
You might not think you need water, but you probably do!
