What if we stopped waiting for perfect plans? Vancouver BC's tactical urbanism projects illustrate what's possible: paint and planter parklets on streets near busy business districts, and in-lane bus stops built from off-the-shelf materials. Fast, low-cost, and improving life for everyone. 🌳🚲🚎🚶🏽‍♀️🐕‍🦺

From today’s @theurbanist.org article: “…Pollet is naturally sympathetic to environmental concerns and is skeptical of efforts to streamline the State Environmental Policy Act.”

Robert Cruickshank@robertcruickshank.com

I'm a longtime Seattle urbanist who is strongly supporting Pollet in this race. He's gotten a lot better on housing, as his record and his quotes in the article demonstrate. Dreher on the other hand has no track record of urbanist advocacy, and thus no reason we should trust a word he says.

And: “Pollet ended up voting for HB 1110, but not before pressing his colleagues to pass an amendment allowing up to a quarter of an affected city's residential land to be carved out of rezones by citing displacement risk.“

This conversation in the LD46 race since the primary has avoided voters' actual concerns. Thanks to @metropolitanglide.bsky.social for the thorough reporting and fact-check. If you care about building more housing & inclusive transpo solutions, vote @willdreher.bsky.social

The City of Seattle is shutting down a cafe’s outdoor deck because the code says any outdoor dining must be 50’ away from a residential property due to noise concerns Funny, we shove all housing growth on the loudest roads our city has. I guess that noise is fine?

Volunteer Park Cafe is great and these neighbors completely suck complaining about this But hey, I want city staff to lean into this noise thing. What is the decibels per ft that they want to achieve? Then apply it to their upzones

Tales of everyday corruption. Pete Hegseth cancelled the $400,000 contract for making uniforms for the Blue Angels on the grounds that the contract with "The Sewing Box" was DEI since the firm is Black-owned. Instead, he awarded it to a Trump donor for $1,690,000, a 325% price increase!

It’s time for the Seattle Parks Department to move into the 21st Century: build and preserve places for people, not cars.

I hope this is the last year we allow Genesee Park to be used as a parking lot for Seafair. It creates a large barren space that degrades the park year round.

Environmental review at the urban level has become a farce.

Ryan Packer@typewriteralley.bsky.social

The project on the left is completely through environmental review and is approved to move into construction and the project on the right needs more environmental analysis, everything is working great.

So many single points of failure

Ryan Packer@typewriteralley.bsky.social

Two things are true at the same time: ST has made immense improvement on service disruptions. And demand to use the system is so high that the current lack of redundancy is going to continue to cause problems.

SEPA when you want to grow by one million people in a sustainable and compact way:

One achievable aspiration for Seattle is to gain a metro population equivalent to Sydney, Australia. So, about a million more people with a substantial portion inside the city limits.

This budget request is moving forward, but Claudia Balducci and Jorge Barón did put secure funding for a report asking for Zahilay's full RTO strategy. That amendment followed a failed attempt to put a hold on the funds to reopen the Admin Building until that report was delivered.

Ryan Packer@typewriteralley.bsky.social

The King County Council is about to approve a budget request from Girmay Zahilay's office, which includes $5.4 million in facilities upgrades and moving expenses to support the county's 3-day RTO mandate. Several county employees are commenting at council right now, voicing concerns about the plan.

We build vehicles that weigh 9000 pounds with 1000HP, can go 0-60mph in 3 seconds and market them recklessly. We then ask people to wear construction vests to cross the street. This is all so beyond absurd and it's truly incredible that we've normalized this.

I'm catching plenty of reader comments that say "What about New York?" "What about Chicago and Washington, D.C.?" A little known subtlety, found in the National Transit Database, tells us that metro Seattle transit use is slightly more per capita than Chicago, and similar totals to Philly.
