I wrote a review of @wadjeteyegames.com's and @richardcobbett.bsky.social's /Nighthawks,/ a game that warms my cold dead heart.

Rob Zacny@robzacny.bsky.social

Here's @brunodias.dev with a very positive review Nighthawks, which is great because I've been excited about this game for literal years. remapradio.com/articles/nig...

Replying to @tef.bsky.social

it's just pretty tiring to hear endless wish fulfilment scenarios "my job will be easier" or "science will get better" when every day it feels like the exact opposite is happening, what with endless crunch and layoffs, and i'm told "but it works on my machine" as if it means anything

In my book I argue that IP fandoms are a crucial part of the economic model of the current media monopoly landscape, as fan campaigns drive down the value of creative labor via harassment and disposability, scare artists from taking risks with IP, and give execs a direct fan base all their own

Charlotte@fireantprincess.bsky.social

I think a lot could be said about how fandoms are very much structured to be consumerist without any critical analysis of capitalist production, and how this is the logical end result of that.

This is a myth. Yes building things is *harder*, especially building them well and sustainably. But this is largely the lie of comfortable moderates. Just look at NYC under Mamdani right now, building can be fast if you're ready to build.

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

Actually, positive change is slow, difficult and incremental by nature. Destroying is fast, building is slow. It is easy to bring misery to people - any idiot can do it, as Trump shows - but very hard to improve their conditions. Building a better society is slow, careful, patient work.

Ah yes, AI labels are just like the cultural revolution's struggle sessions. After you label your game "made with AI", you are dragged out in front of the Chick-fil-a and beaten to death with socks full of recalled Tesla batteries.

Chet Faliszek@chetsucks.com

So… Tim thought people were being too political for not eating at Chick-fil-a but steams ai disclosure is…. What?!! I think I would describe Tim as - hysterical? Melting down? Crashing out? Or just simply a shitty dude?

There are 175 Democrats in the House. There are 39 Republicans pretending to be Democrats in the House.

The persecution of @repilhan.bsky.social just days before an election is vile and politically-motivated. I'm leading 175 House Democrats in denouncing this. When we retake power, we have to seriously look at how we can stop these abuses of power — starting with the power of the purse.

I have so much smoke for this dullard.

Senator Dick Durbin@durbin.senate.gov

ICE is not doing enough to protect the immigrants in its custody. Its negligence is killing people and tearing families apart. This Administration must answer for its role in this travesty.

Genuinely so funny that all of the "prediction" market CEO's were saying this was a scientific way of crowdsourcing truth, and then every moronic gamble looks like this

G Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris.com

Brazil elected Lula again tonight. Poll averages appear to have had Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro effectively tied, maybe Bolsonaro up 1 on Lula — so not sure why the markets had this race at 80-20 Bolsonaro. Markets might miss big in the U.S. midterms in 9 days too.

It was supposed to be called the layoff industry, but McKinsey ran a focus group and video games went +99/-1 (there was 1 CEO in the group)

The video games industry works by laying off employees. Any video games produced are only an incidental side-effect

This is neglect of a minor. You should, at a minimum, have to do 200 hours of state mandated family therapy and have your computer taken away if this is how you treat your kid.

David Gura@davidgura.bsky.social

cool, cool

Yeah, it's really free and fair when the US is abducting their president, and installing puppet dictators. Literally doing the Republicans' job for them, thanks Dick.

Senator Dick Durbin@durbin.senate.gov

I was pleased to host Maria Corina Machado, whose coalition soundly won the 2024 election, at the United States Capitol earlier this year. Her return to Venezuela is welcome news that should decidedly move the country toward a clear path to free & fair elections next year.

We need to be way angrier than we are. I'm all for adopting the framing from the End Times Fascism book, namely that these people - the techbros - are traitors to the human race.

I can not think of a circle of hell lower than gig retail. The worst of all worlds.

Kim Kelly@kimkelly.bsky.social

just stumbled across a nightmarish new app that’s trying to gig-ify retail jobs by offering up “flexible” shifts at understaffed stores to a “vetted pool of retail associates.” these tech ghouls keep chipping away at the few remaining broadly accessible jobs. soon there will be nothing left.

I’m a Texan trans kid who almost died because of Ken Paxton. The world should know what he’s done. This was very difficult for me to write, but given what's at stake, I cannot bear to stay silent about what I went through at Paxton's hands. He must not be rewarded for what he's done to trans kids.

Back in June, Cook County Sheriff deputy Gigliotti dapped up an ICE agent after an arrest in a suburban courthouse, prompting an investigation by the sheriff's professional review office. Sheriff spox says the ICE agent is an ex-CCSO employee and Gigliotti was "simply greeting a former colleague."

I'm leaning that this was malicious compliance from the artist at the company as a (no pun intended) middle finger to management.

Cale Michael@xjustified.bsky.social

This shit just writes itself at this point. Just the name "Epic AI MegaJam" is a joke that best describes what is going on with these companies.

I mean, if I meet the founding fathers in the afterlife, I'm also about to get spit roasted by Satan, so their finger wagging is probably the least of my concerns.

Philip Bump@pbump.com

Even if this were viable as a concept (that there's an afterlife; that it allows conversations with others; that enslavers are going the same place as you), who cares? Oh, are you mad at me, Ben Franklin? Tough shit.

This reads like something out of the Onion..

IGN@ign.com

EA Sports has announced that it is working on a new open-world football game that the company calls "Project Gridiron," which seems to be separate from Madden and College Football. https://bit.ly/4z63a9U

The only way this could possibly be good, is if it's also a dating sim where you're an NCAA football star on campus looking for love and going to geology classes.

GM wants your car to be your personal assistant, LG wants your fridge to function as a licensed therapist, Sony wants your PlayStation to give you a rimjob. Can we just make inanimate objects that work please?

Adam Jentleson on what he says Democrats should build if they win big: a stronger social safety net, from wage insurance for workers who lose jobs to AI to universal health care.

So, so many cases of executives demanding that certain revenue generating concessions be made with a game, it fucks up the game's design, makes the game perform poorly at launch, and then is used as an excuse to shutter the studio. Utterly maddening.

There is something so soul crushing about creating art that pushes the needle in the games industry, only to be thanked by using the capital gained from said art to push the ones who created it out of a job.

Electronic Arts closing BioWare, laying off hundreds: aftermath.site/electronic-art...

This thread is exactly it.

Nayan Ramachandran@thetrin.blacksky.app

I feel obliged to once again reiterate that lay offs and closures are not a reaction to the economy, but a failure of leadership. Each wave of closures and layoffs should be looked upon as a consequence of greed and incompetence. If you can't keep your people employed, you are bad at your job.

Just merge every corporation into one uber monopoly and be done with it already. That's the end goal right, just a government made of businesses?

Every game CEO is chasing Minecraft/Fortnite/CoD level successes. Every game company is expected to just shit out 15 sequels of the same game, and make $25 billion dollars, otherwise they should be dissolved and everyone fired.

I literally don't have words for the news of EA closing Bioware. Unconscionable, incompetent, soulless decision-making. May everyone involved in these decision suffer Renegade interrupts for the rest of their lives.

The industry, as it exists, is fundamentally treating game studios acting as speculative assets for VC's and out of touch executives. There's very little investment in the AAA space for storytelling, because that's not a line item for revenue, despite that being a driver of purchases.

Vertical Slice@verticalslice.news

EA shutters BioWare and carves through other teams months after after Saudi-led buyout An internal email obtained by Vertical Slice states EA is also "bringing together" Respawn and DICE to work on a new shooter.

The fraud snitch line is dumb, and will probably get shit down when it gets flooded with Shrek porn or whatever. But what does this even mean?

They found $157 million in fraud, but stopped $2.3 billion a year? Huh? I know these assholes are functionally illiterate, but still..

I hate to break it to Julie, but it seems like there's quite a lot of room for hate in NYC, especially for the poor and unhoused.

Wtaf ... I mean ... This assumption is super antisemitic itself... Is it not? A bank?!

If Trump/Johnson/Milei/Meloni etc. have destroyed the social contract politically, the AI companies have destroyed it economically. What faith is there to have in a system where your labor and dignity can be invalidated by the worst of humanity?

Freya Holmér@freya.bsky.social

it really does feel like they just got away with unprecedented amount of theft of expertise, and are now profiting off of it while replacing the professional opportunities for the very crafts and humans it trained on I never thought I would see the concept of expertise get so devalued

It really bothers me that a bunch of meat proxy, AI dipshits have jobs, and some of the smartest people I know do not.
