Has anyone else found that Opus 5 is having more stupidly in the last few days? Or just me and @dbsmasher.com? It really went from a well reasoning system to spewing nonsense and having to correct itself A LOT in a weekend.

Post incident review: "And in hindsight, that 10x markup on services was supposed to be a multiplier, not an exponent. We're going to add a test to catch if it happens again."

Capturing a great, complete image of the Veil Nebula complex is my one mission for this winter. This is a single 5 minute sub of the O-iii emissions of the West Veil Nebula. I'm going to need at least 20 hours of this, and another 30+ hours of various other emissions and colour bands...

When will people learn what trust boundaries are? You cannot have the same instance of an agent accessing things in two different security boundaries. In the worst case here you may need a completely separate instance of the agent for every private repo an org has. noma.security/blog/gitlost...

Actually no, that's not the worst case. The worst case is the combination of every possible security policy. Otherwise you might as well just run everything as root.

I have a Keychron Q6 Max keyboard which needs to go into my will to be bequeathed to a child in the future. But how do you decide which child gets it??

New achievement! RTFM as a Service! You found the documentation all by yourself. Don't you just feel like such a big kid now? Keep at it little one! At this rate you might be able to apply the docs one day too! I wouldn't count on it though. Reward... You've received a bronze I Can Read Now Box!

It just took me 10 minutes to buy Sudafed in this country. It would have been faster to find a meth dealer and get it from them

There are at least THREE ironies in this news feed snippet. AI writing about AI. AI saying what it's written may not be factual and you shouldn't trust it. And then AI mentioning human error in the context of air travel like it's not heard of decades of research on this topic.

Friend: ah fuck, I'm an SRE @dbsmasher.com: We don’t choose the game. The game chooses us. Never in the history of "help, I've fallen into SRE" has there been as clear an answer on why this happens.

@nytguildtech.bsky.social Hey folks Can you help me understand why your games app, when I only played it for 20 minutes yesterday morning, continues to run in the background and use 10% of my total battery? As a percentage of my battery use, it's half the combined total of all apps. Pls help!

Goose: WHAT ALGORITHM Goose, pursuing: WHAT ALGORITHM, KENNEDY

Fox News: "If you only watch one side or you only watch the other, you were doing great harm to yourself by not exposing yourself to more viewpoints. Well, take that and multiply it by a thousand. You know, that's what targeted algorithms do on platforms like Bluesky..." This whole clip is amazing.

Someone has to build the last line of defense. Someone has to ensure the fail safes are properly gapped. Someone has to assume the entire system is adversarial and protect the customers. We've seen this story many times before. In 20 years someone else will be writing this story on $new_thing.

Companies who will come through this less scathed are the ones holding on to their technical talent, especially the people who focus on the safety and reliability of their systems. In about two years everyone else will realise they should have done that too. Thank you for coming to my #sre talk.

It took 2 years to go from "We're in a new easy-button world" to "Oh my god what have we done." Jer and PocketOS were themselves just trying to run a small business and do the best they can. They trusted their infrastructure (and now development) providers. They weren't wrong to do it.

What everyone will start learning (again) is the other side of the equation: We're responsible and accountable for our work to our customers and the latest tech isn't a shortcut. It's a risk. Reliability is *challenging* on a good day. Most days it feels Sisyphean. You can't skip the humans here.

Mostly helping start ups, small businesses, local libraries. I'd been doing this as a side gig for about 6 years at that point. AWS had launched in 2006 and in 2007 I started to see a lot of my sysadmin gigs dry up. "Our developers can do all that themselves now, we don't need you."

At the time I was young and naive and figured that was that. I limped along for a few years. Then in 2010 I saw a huge surge in new business. The story was always the same: "We were wrong, it turns out reliability/scaling/production readiness isn't easy. Please help. We're in trouble."

Go watch Project Hail Mary. If you can get an early screening before the main release next week, go. GO NOW.

Pulitzer Prize right here.

This is the last photo in that camera before @john-abernathy.bsky.social threw it. This is an incredible shot. Look at the reflection of the people running to him in the phone on the right side, while on the left side LEO is blocking the view of observers and protesters.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

Just watched the entire Fox interview with Mamdani and holy SHIT he killed it. This level of message discipline, framing the pitch to fit the priors & biases of the target audience, outflanking them on key narratives like mom-and-pop businesses — it is absolutely unbelievable to see this brilliance.
