What’s `b` after this runs? let a = 10; let b = a; a = 0; It’s 10. Even though I had gotten it right, I couldn’t have explained why. @danabra.mov and @maggieappleton.com’s course, Just JavaScript, helped me develop a better mental model of how it works and now it's free. justjavascript.com/learn

We'll quickly regret defunding and losing those who read the specs, learn, explore, measure, weigh, and share their hard-won experience. When the answer to every question is "I asked Claude and clicked approve" we yield actual answers to probabilities and will always be left asking, "Are you sure?"

New Things You Should Know About HTML Here in Mid 2026 The foundational language of the web is getting plenty of love lately! While HTML moves a bit more slowly than its buddies, CSS and JavaScript, that tends to be a good thing. I'm not gonna do, like, in here. That's too basic for you. Tha

I was going to do a short post on Modern Web Guidance; it turned into a huge deep dive. Here's what it does, why it raised eyebrows, and on-point information with truth bombs. I tried to be complete and honest. It's not magic, but in time, it might just make the web a little bit better.

I never understood why Safari dropped support for theme-color. Doing something automagic to create a seamless edge-to-edge experience seems fine, but that should be a fallback in case there is no theme-color. That way we can move on from hacks like grooovinger.com/notes/2026-0... to set the color.
Just watched @nerdy.dev's CSS Day talk on Contextualism. Excellent as usual. Adam shared a mega list of things a component could and should respond to. He was so mad that most of our components (including his own) do almost none of it. conffab.com/presentation... css-day-2026.netlify.app

Niklas Gruhn, on relaying AI output verbatim: > prompt AI. But don’t just relay the output. Read it, understand it, validate it, and then write a response in your own words (a decent certificate that you’ve done the prior steps). Making that effort is value you can add. gruhn.me/blog/2026-08...
As Dave Rupert mentioned, he wants the prompt because it shows the context you gave the machine and your understanding of the problem: "I’d rather have the original prompt so I can just ask the machine myself." daverupert.com/2026/04/clau...

Custom Properties. Variables is what people wanted. Custom Properties is how they were implemented in CSS. Because they are properties, they are a core part of the language: they cascade, go through the value processing steps, etc. — so much more powerful than just "variables".
