I work on an Expanse inspired space game in my free time. Right now, I am still early in development and just doing what feels good. Feel free to ask questions!

At the end of my internship at Adobe, we could not release code for numerous reasons. But I thought that the pseudo-code in the paper would be enough for anyone to re-implement it! I was wrong 🫠 @arezdev.de contacted me a week ago, asking why his implementation did not work...

Baptiste Genest@baptiste-genest.bsky.social

Implicit surfaces are great, but if you are not Inigo Quilez, it's really hard to control how they look... That's why I'm really proud to annonce our Eurographics 2025 paper: "Implicit UVs: Real-time semi-global parameterization of implicit surfaces".

My implementation of the paper "Implicit UVs: Real-time semi-global parameterization of implicit surfaces" from @baptiste-genest.bsky.social. The paper describes a way to texture SDFs in realtime by letting the user place seeds on the surface which get blended into a global UV space #godot #Graphics

Link to my source code: github.com/ARez2/Implic... This was a really interesting algorithm to implement. And does a good job at UVs! Thanks to Baptiste for helping me with some issues of my implementation ❤️ He also made a standalone C++ version (without Godot), based on my initial implementation.

Until now I used a 3D model of the Rocinante which is ofc not allowed due to copyright. So I asked a ship designer from the game Space Engineers to design a ship for me, which I can use as a reference to model a new ship. Heres my current progress on it #indiedev #gamedev #space #scifi #TheExpanse

Of course this is still WIP and some stuff is missing (like PDC and railgun models) but I am pretty proud how far I got. I consider myself more of a programmer so doing this from scratch was a lot of work for me 😁

Added Boids-like separation to the torpedoes. I think it looks much cooler now. The blue spheres are just for the video :D #indiedev #gamedev #space #scifi #TheExpanse

Next step of the bullet system done: ricoshet of bullets. Depending on the angle of impact, they have a certain chance to penetrate into the hurtbox or alternatively ricoshet off it. I also made them loose velocity on impact (WIP). #indiedev #gamedev #space #scifi #TheExpanse

I started implementing bullet penetration into multiple hurtboxes. Here you can see how a bullet hits all three hurtboxes in a row. I still need to implement proper damage falloff but that shouldn't be too hard 🙂 #indiedev #gamedev #space #scifi #TheExpanse

And thanks to rewriting the bullet system into a highly performant C++ engine module I can now support more than 10x the amount of bullets for a tiny fraction of the processing power! I am really happy with this system now 😁🚀

I have reworked the enemy ""pathfinding"" so that it can follow a given path of checkpoints (each with a target speed). It also has an "emergency brake" if things go wrong :D Its not perfect yet, but huge progress for me and I am happy about that 😀 #indiedev #gamedev #space #scifi #TheExpanse

Added a world boundary. Currently I set the size arbitrarily to a radius of 5000 km. That means that two ships can be at most 10000 km apart. Which I believe should be enough to get some nice long range combat :) #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

I also set the ships max speed to 10000 m/s. Also an arbitrary number but I think clamping it will help the physics engine and prevent some weird things from happening 😅

Worked a bit on the UI and the player input. There are two input modes: - Control mode toggled using CTRL. If enabled, your ship aligns with the direction the camera is facing. - Freelook mode enabled while holding ALT. Otherwise its an orbit cam #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

Its starting to feel like a real game now! 😁🚀 UI is of course just the first draft and not final at all, though I am quite happy with the signatures. (the text in the center of the screen is just to make the video more understandable).

And here are a couple more screenshots

Improved the godrays once again so that they look more like volumetric god rays. The biggest difference is from the angle shown at the very start of the video (when looking perpendicular to the sun direction) #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

To anyone interested: I have now open-sourced the entire compositor effect here: github.com/ARez2/compos... #godotengine #FOSS

Screen space god rays implemented into the same compositor effect I already used for the sun/ sun flares. This all runs in the editor 😁 #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

Here's *yet* another iteration over the asteroids :) I do think this one already looks much better! #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

Yet another pass on the asteroid and this time also the background. I made it a bit lighter to improve readability. #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

I quickly did some work on an asteroid model. Improved mesh and material. Let me know if you have some more ideas for the game :) #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

And here's a screenshot of the thruster in a destroyed state. #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

Worked some more on the combat (improved projectile hit detection, added spread to PDCs, added hit VFX, improved aiming logic factoring in acceleration and more). Also improved thruster visuals. Here is how it looks in action 🚀 #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

I think I FINALLY managed to fix the PDC aiming after struggling with it for MONTHS. They should be able to align themselves way more consistently with the target now. What you're seeing here is my test scene for them. #indiedev #gamedev #godotengine #expanse #TheExpanse

Hey gamers, did you know that game developers share updates about their upcoming games on Saturdays using the hashtag #ScreenshotSaturday‽ Check out the Screenshot Saturday feed for the inside scoop on new indie games!

Found some time today and implemented torpedoes. They use an algorithm called "proportional navigation". Quite happy to get this done :) So next up is a hitbox system #gamedev #indiedev #screenshotsaturday #expanse #godot

Current progress on my Expanse-inspired space combat game. Enemy "AI" is at least doing something, but its not that good. Added a projectile system. Next up would be AI improvements and internal component-based hitbox system. #gamedev #indiedev #screenshotsaturday #expanse #godot

I have remastered the "C'mon do something" meme/ image in Inkscape to improve the quality and be useful as desktop background. So here you go, have 4 different variations of the design.

Currently working on an Expanse-inspired space combat game and wanted to show my progress on the thruster effect :)

You are up to date.
