Hmmm Brisbane rates as the 14th most congested city on the 2025 INRX index. Maybe that’s what you get when you keep thinking expanding roads for driving fixes traffic…

@ll Things Just reposted

We had 4mm of light rain overnight. Because drivers are so bad, the weather bureau puts out a "Road Weather Alert" to say "wet roads can be slippery". Car culture meets toddlerism.

Do we owe each other anything as members of the same society? This is the first question we have to ask ourselves if we want to understand inequality.

Bricks rock.

Philip Oldfield@sustainabletall.bsky.social

The success of modern Iranian brickwork is not just informed by history and craft… but is made possible with advanced digital design tools and software Here, for example, is an undulating brick facade created with parametric design, by architect Mehdi Farahmand

Character is still losing $9 million a month AFTER - laying off employees - making its model worse on purpose to be cheaper - moving to open source models - adding usage limits - spamming ads in its product - adding new in-app paid products

Must be quite a fun kindy, if the kids are still hanging out there when they're 9 and loving the geography that they study hard from their stack of books on their early 20th century retro desks.

Mel Campbell@incrediblemelk.bsky.social

WILD W FURY that a local KINDERGARTEN is recruiting TEACHERS using fkn AI INCOMPETENT CHATBOTS, in charge of deciding who is left alone with tiny vulnerable humans, teaching them crucial skills! This shows ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY for hiring MANDATORY REPORTERS And cop its slop-made recruitment page!!

Don't know about you, but I think it is about time for a diplomatic spat.

John Quiggin@johnquiggin.bsky.social

Truly lame from Josh Taylor at the Guardian. We don't allow the broadcast of ISIS execution videos and we shouldn't treat US state terrorism any differently for fear of a "diplomatic spat".

My god. A Virginia data center ran backup diesel generators full blast for 24 hours, creating a giant cloud of toxic smoke that choked its human neighbors. The government claimed there was nothing they could do.

OP-ED: “Removing Toronto's bike lanes puts children's health at risk.” Actually, well documented evidence shows that EVERYONE is put at risk. And it costs EVERYONE. “The Ford government decision to tear up bike-lanes is bad for kids, families, cyclists, drivers, taxpayers & the planet.” And more.

"hype [is] an ordinary, structural mechanism for extracting short-term profit"

Tech Policy Press@techpolicypress.bsky.social

“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.

A friend just wrote me about what is happening right now with AI decompiling games and applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) and it has really shaken me because the implications for the free market are staggering Basically closed source software is over forever and it happened overnight

Understatement of the year: "...economic costs of wealth taxation, in terms of migration and firm investment, are more limited than the public debate implies."

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854

Unfortunately OpenAI collapsed 1980 out of musical history, so that won't exist. Vienna might have eaten up While My Guitar Gently weeps (1968), but sorry, that won't ever exist either.

What song do you think the 1805 Viennese would have liked, but won't ever get to hear? Not even their great ..great-grandchildren? (Quote Post the very top of this thread with song or opus you're thinking of.)

OpenAIs bellicose press release on the afternoon on 8 April 1805, speaks of a new era, that they achieved ultimate alignment, they are open to regulation and also that the weak will be ripped and torn away...

How do you feel? Are you thrilled that 180+ years of musical history just turned out obsolete? Or do you think the 1805 Viennese bourgeoisie might have also liked the eponymous album Iron Maiden?

Great news that High Court has ruled Scope 3 emissions (exported carbon pollution) must be considered in new environmental approvals for coal mines. I’ve moved two Bills in the Parliament to that effect, both times rejected by the enviro-vandals in the ALP and LNP #auspol

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.
