My hottest AI take is that the executive class is petrified of labor and saw that whatever else LLMs are/aren't, they're fine labor-smashers + that a ton of ordinary people find the artificial hyper-complexity and scamminess of modern life and work so unbearable that they'll throw a god-box at it.

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

This is a great talk and really articulates a lot of how I've been thinking about it. Fortunately for me, figuring out what to build has always been the value-add job, producing code was a side effect. Lately I’ve been wondering what a "GitHub for intent" looks like…

My talk "the death of the code review" hit 100k views recently. This talk, "the rise of the product engineer" is basically the sequel, exploring what happens after you automate everything engineers do: https://youtu.be/kspZP5BgkEU?is=th5b1CKyIUNDEK63

Great news from the Solomon administration, announcing 17 of our worst intersections are getting the full safety upgrade. Pedestrians were killed by vehicles at several of these intersections over the last 2 years, and I'm thrilled the city is taking action. @jerseycitynj.bsky.social bit.ly/4zNkrVo

My favorite graphics in "Transportation and the Shape of Cities" #8: A bike lane can be built with paint and plastic, made more durable with curbs and planters, or built into the infrastructure of a rebuilt street. All take the same space, but the cost and the feel of the street are quite different.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

As a member of The Left, I have something to say about schooling: Do this. And free lunch. And free snack. My school district sends my kid to a Head Start center for PreK. They provide free bfast, lunch, & snack, unlike the district preschool, & the menu is great. Do this for all schools & grades.

My kid has started a Letterboxd list called Killer Sweaters for films where the killer wears a great sweater and they've asked me to throw it out to Bluesky for more because "that's the kind of thing those weirdos like to do"

One of the key lessons from Dutch cycling history is cities didn't start with protected lanes. They began by making streets safer, calmer and more inviting; with lower speeds, parking restrictions, traffic filters and reduced through-traffic to create an environment in which cycling could flourish.🧵

Replying to @modacitylife.com

The better approach is to create the conditions for cycling first: build demand; then invest in high-end infrastructure where the numbers justify. Not every street needs a protected lane, and sometimes the most important intervention is just a street where cars have been slowed, filtered or removed.

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.

1/23 Sorry, this will be long... There is a lot of shouting about what happened in the Channel yesterday. So I want to go back to basic law. Not immigration policies or political rhetoric. At sea, the starting point is simple: Preservation of life comes first under all maritime conventions.

Emma Yeomans@yeomans.bsky.social

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

not mentioned in this screenshot but appearing later in the article is that the US is sharing details of the deportees with the Iranian government, despite many of them having fled after resisting the regime that the US is ostensibly fighting a war to remove

Amtrak didn’t tell us about this exposure, so heads up: if you took an Amtrak train last week through Chicago or anywhere on the Southwest Chief, Coast Starlight, or California Zephyr routes like we did, you may have been exposed to measles! Please let the train people in your life know about this

this from @ftrain.com is terrific, unsurprisingly, and I think this sentence actually understates the issue; it's not just that the big labs are in a hurry, it's that they don't see producing useful and well-documented tools for using these models as an important part of what they're doing
