Vanity Fair asked me to talk about visual effects, and it was my great honor to show off some of ILM’s terrific work over the years. Todd Vaziri on Vanity Fair VFX youtu.be/ERKEsIzTFas?...

it was so fun hearing Spielberg with @seanfennessey.bsky.social talking about Hal lip-reading Floyd and Bowman and then watch this scene a week later
huh that’s weird
President Trump temporarily waived clean-air rules for industrial facilities that spew cancer-causing gases. Then his appointees worked to gut the regulations altogether. Our investigative reporter Eric Lipton explains how corporate interests took power inside the EPA. Read more: nyti.ms/4il3336
whenever you have an opportunity to see “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977) on a big screen — GO
boy, Close Encounters (seen via @filmadelphia.org’s new 70mm projector) still plays like a gem. The women in front of me not only did the Leo point when Devil’s Tower showed up on Richard Dreyfus’ TV but was vigorously gesturing for him to turn around and look at it

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

like vance, ramaswamy is a hateful, resentful orc of a human being, and the reason i think this will hurt him politically — where this stuff didn’t hurt trump — is that ramaswamy, like vance, is also profoundly unlikeable. he has no charm or charisma or anything. just a dipshit.
Unearthed footage of Vivek Ramaswamy mocking Amy Acton for being a survivor of childhood abuse: "She has no vision other than to complain about what someone else did to her"

My brain cannot process this level of corruption. She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee." And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/u...

huh, so "paid protesters" every accusation is a confession
Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.
“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991) was entirely improvised. The director James Cameron liked it so much he kept the movie in the movie.
We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

If we tax Elon Musk and his fellow billionaires appropriately, every child in America can have healthcare, education, and a well funded social safety net instead of some racist billionaire’s pathetic pr stunt
Elon Musk has said he will give every child in America a stake in SpaceX, his $2 trillion aerospace and artificial intelligence company, as tech firms face intensifying scrutiny over their impact on society. https://cnn.it/4yWTjTJ

I wrote about one of my favorite shots from David Fincher's "Seven", which turned into an essay about telephoto lenses and getting a myth about the movie debunked. http://fxrant.blogspot.com/2024/10/this-shot-from-seven-is-not-visual.html

VFX’ers *want* to build and shoot miniatures, frequently they are the right tool for the job. Unfortunately production schedules have gotten so short that there is absolutely not enough time to do so. Plus certain filmmakers cannot commit to shot design, which is required for miniature work.

Right-wing billionaires now own the Washington Post, the LA Times, CNN, CBS News, virtually every local TV station, virtually every news radio station, most local newspapers, X, Facebook, Threads, and TikTok. (Did I miss any?) They own almost the entire information environment.
Note: TikTok - 15% owned by Musk pal Larry Ellison - permanently banned our "Musk" the movie account on the platform. www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politic...

The Trump regime wants to make it illegal to criticize them or vote them out of office.
Apparently at around 1:30 PM ET, the main accounts for the No Kings coalition on Instagram were frozen and pulled down. Admins have lost access to the account and are unable to log in. This happened at the peak of the organization's national day of action. Instagram, of course, is owned by Meta.
