Okay, it's time for a proper intro thread, not just the one I whacked up there during the workday. I'm Adele, I'm a law librarian by day and romance author by night. I talk occasionally about a bunch of stuff but a lot about books. I'm about to talk about my books!

Can we stop calling them "prediction markets" and call them what they are, which is betting/gambling platforms? My teeth itch every time someone says they're "trading" on one of those things. Betting. What you're doing is called betting or gambling, Kevin.

It is long past time to stop giving anyone in the GOP a cookie for simply not being utterly horrifying.

Courtney got me POWERFULLY interested in this book years ago on the SB podcast by saying, "I told a friend I'd never write a contemporary...unless I did X. And I'd never write a billionaire...unless I did Y." I don't know how many things she said she'd never do (and did in this book), but I was all:

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

"What a fantastic book. I don't know where to even start with the raving." -Smart Bitches, Trashy Books /jb Amazon: www.amazon.com/Trade... Apple: itunes.apple.com/us/... Nook: http://www.barnesand... Kobo: http://store.koboboo... #ContemporaryRomance #Romance #CycloneSeries

And it (and a few others) made me realize there's always a "but" book for tropes I usually hate (in this case, billionaires).

"Bombast." That's what you call a vile attack on a survivor of childhood sex abuse. Okay, Bezos.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

President Trump’s brand of politics has consumed the Republican Party for a decade. But bipartisan outrage over Vivek Ramaswamy’s ad featuring his opponent’s estranged mother shows how candidates often fail when they try to embody the president’s bombast.

If you keep up with the financial news too you’ll see that C-Suite employees of the big AI and AI adjacent companies have sold off billions of dollars of stock in their own companies in the last 6 months. The smart money’s cashing out of this pump and dump whilst they can before the rug pull

*Even their financial infrastructure is a strange ouroboros, a self-inflating ring of I-loan-to-you and you-loan-to-me *It's like Enron with Nvidia chips instead of natural-gas

And I want it to be clear this should be a matter of consent. I should have a right to veto use of GenAI to alter the text of my book, to forbid my book being fed into any LLM including proprietary, and to veto its use in associated areas--cover, design, translation, audio, and marketing copy.

-A living wage -Guaranteed healthcare -The right to join a union -The right to vote -The right to choose when, how, and with whom you start a family -The right for you and your family to live free from gun violence This is what we really need to thrive — not flying cars or AI or giant data centers.

I mean, @edzitron.com says it with a lot more receipts, but GenAI is a way bigger bubble than the dotcom one. And I worked for Nasdaq during that whole fiasco, fwiw.

These books are super fun!

Discounted for the first time ever. A novella set on the Appalachian Trail. A retired covert operative, his dog, a Cartel sicario, a survivalist and more. amzn.to/3PGEcfb #climate #climateaction #appalachiantrail

Art. I would also argue that this is not "frivolous," as I've been buying art since I've had even a little bit of surplus cash. But yeah, that's what I'd buy.

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

lol this is like asking if i'd give up bedbugs to shut down rats. YES I WOULD LIKE TO GET RID OF ALL THE PESTILENCE THANK YOU

You know...just musing about how the right completely lost it and claimed that Michelle Obama was "disbarred" when she went on inactive status because she wasn't going to practice law AS THE FIRST LADY. No reason, really.

Judd Legum@juddlegum.bsky.social

As I first reported on Monday, Katie Zacharia is not a lawyer and has never been licensed to practice law. The WSJ reports that she took the California Bar Exam but failed. Nevertheless, Zacharia appeared on media programs for YEARS and repeatedly called herself a lawyer. Here's a super cut:

The post is disingenuous.. “We are clear that there can never be any truly ethical use of generative AI because of the way LLMs have been trained on copyright works without permission or payment; the detrimental environmental impacts; and the harmful effect it has on disempowered communities.” +

The only people who think book banning is good publicity are authors who sell so many copies they wouldn't notice. Okay, cool, the ban didn't sink Stephen King's career? Try interviewing a queer author whose book hasn't hit four digits.

Darcie Little Badger@littlebadger.bsky.social

Posting this because there’s a misconception that being challenged/banned is good publicity that’ll boost sales. In my experience, the opposite is true.

I look forward to a statement from the union of restaurateurs that they will only use dog shit in a responsible manner. • Promote responsible and ethical use of dog shit • Comply with the evolving best practice recommendations on dog shit in food • Where dog shit is used, it is used for good.

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.

The Verge@theverge.com

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

I LOVE teaching novel workshops. There’s nothing more satisfying than helping someone navigate that particular marathon. Unfortunately, most workshops are geared for short stories. That’s why I started offering my Whole Novel Workshop several years ago.

To the person noting there is not enough money in the world to license every piece of intellectual property stolen for "AI" training: you're sooooo close to the point, friend, keep going, you'll get there if you try

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

The world would be a better place if more people internalised the idea that "not for me" does not equal "crap", and "stuff I like" is not objectively better than "stuff I don't like".

Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.
