Apropos of nothing, if you're considering switching from a recently deprecated browser and want to try Firefox, I just landed `Copy Tab URL` in nightly - it's not bound by default but a quick visit to `about:keyboard` will let you set it, and also take a glance at the other neat shortcuts we have.

But also, they started writing their own browser (Konqueror) from scratch. It seemed crazy at the time, but it resulted in KHTML/KJS, which ultimately became the basis for Safari and Chrome!

I think these examples can show that community-driven projects can have an impact way beyond their userbase, as they prove out ideas that more mainstream platforms adopt.

I used KDE as my primary desktop from roughly 2000-2009. It was way out ahead of everyone at the time, for example: - It had a keyboard launcher (Alt-F2) years before Quicksilver/Alfred went mainstream on the Mac. - Built-in clipboard history, decades before macOS and Windows.

As someone whose life spans multiple timezones, love this!

Good thread on sandboxing as a critical primitive that (outside of maybe web browsers) we could do better on.

warpfork@warpfork.bsky.social

I think QubesOS and they way they actively integrate with the window manager to make it possible to *see* the sandboxes at all times: this is the way. This is what we should lift lessons from and do more of. Windows are the, well, windows through which users route all of their interaction. Matters!

I'm in the market for a "team brain" for a small company (<10 people). Wishes: - Ability to dump in PDFs, spreadsheets, text files, URLs, etc - Fast, accurate, and up-to-date search to answer questions like "where's the latest employment contract template?"

Product survey so far: - Glean: enterprisey and expensive - Notion: their agents haven't clicked for me yet; and not surprisingly emphasizes Notion docs over flat files - Claude Projects / Team: file store seems pretty limited (file size limits for example), no Discord integration

- Onyx: promising! but indexing on things like Google Drive seems to be complex to set up and slow (e.g. runs every ten minutes or once a day, not continuously indexed) Suggestions? What are you using?

- Well-designed phone and desktop apps to upload and browse files, and ask questions via chat - Discord bot that tracks discussions and records decisions (goes into the doc system above) - Stretch: coding and deployment of ad-hoc web pages, e.g. "make me a dashboard showing VAT collected by quarter"

Looking forward to this one

On Oct 14th 1996, Matthias Ettrich, a student in Germany, posted to Usenet asking for help build a real desktop for Linux. That post led to the creation of KDE, one of the most impactful free software communities in the world. Catch the trailer for our documentary about KDE on Saturday 19th.

As a follow up to the @localfirstconf.com we are doing a unofficial local-first meetup in Cologne on the 15th of October. Maybe this can be a regular event where we can exchange knowledge? The two talks are to get the conversations started. If you are interested in joining, feel free to contact me.

A century before we would move from fixed-program computers to reprogrammable ones, Ada Lovelace realized that the Analytical Engine was capable of universal computation. Reading her Notes is thrilling for her awestruck articulation of these ideas. Available now; link in reply.

Screenshot diffing, feedback inboxes, PWAs, and of course local-first sync layer with self-hosted backend. Matches up pretty well with my approach on personal apps thus far into the LLM coding age. Curious to hear from others.

Francis Irving@flourish.org

I vibe coded three personal apps that I'd wanted for a while. They work on mobile and web, sync offline first between them, and are polished. This write up describes why, how, and what I learnt. www.flourish.org/2026/08/pers...

Doesn't hurt that one of the hosts is Virginia Postrel, a personal hero of mine! She's the author of books that have deeply influenced my life and career: The Substance of Style, and The Future and Its Enemies.

I’ll be there.

Last year's edition of this event was brain-bending for me and directly led to me starting to write about the Phoenix Architecture (and then my upcoming book Regenerative Software for @oreilly.bsky.social ). Limited spots, but I'd love to see some of you there. counterfactual.blueyard.com

Had a fantastic time at @localfirstconf.com. Started off relatively stark with discussions acknowledging the general political instability of our times and how much data sovereignty matters. Ended with an absolutely wild demo of @inkandswitch.com's patchwork project. Lots of good bits in between.

flying back from @localfirstconf.com, and wow what a stellar conference. This year's program was by far my fav lineup of any conf I've been to. Chaos day was great. Hats off to the organizers!

Day 2 @localfirstconf.com continues with the same level of intensity 🤯 First, @pfrazee.com gave us a tour of how to scale distributed systems. Now we’re learning about IMAP’s quirks and a new proposal (JMAP - yes JSON) from @fastmail.com

Ilja@fubits.dev

Too mind-blown by @localfirstconf.com to post about @localfirstconf.com Currently learning from @jakelazaroff.com how atproto *really* works.
