There’s an interesting article to be written about gay men’s networks in SV But this is a homophobic framing that treats gay men in authority as inherently illegitimate SV has a sexual harassment problem & gay men with authority participate in it, but purging gay men would not end harassment

I don’t think there such an article. Gay sociality is configured into networks that resemble the social networks every other person on Earth participates in. Ours just happens to be of licentious intrigue because heteronormativity demands that gay people surrender our privacy to spectacle.

Gay male socialization is indeed fraught with harassment, abuse, and worse, and there is absolutely nothing that intercession from outsiders could do to improve it. I understand that’s not really the point, though; it’s only possible merit is that it may make for good exploitative copy.

I don’t mean to direct this stern lecture at you and your innocuous curiosity personally, by the way; apologies that it seems that way. These are just grievances at the general situation.

Hey @wired.com, want you to know that I just canceled my subscription over this. You can absolutely talk about immoral gay men without resorting to gross stereotypes and making homophobia seem like a justified, principled stance. Shame on you all

hey this is a really fucking weird angle who asked for this like techbro creeps need guillotined whether they're gay or not lol damn this is weird y'all are very weird for this.

Mixed feelings about this article. As a gay man there is something empowering about the idea of gay men having so much power and influence in tech, but that doesn’t match my own experience in the industry. I read the full article and I worry this is just fuel for homophobes to say “I told you so.”

WIRED desperately running cover for Epstein billionaires like Gates by blaming gay people, and of course the entire article is just repackaged homophobia, from the thesis to the images.

The misogyny (and Republican-leaning, MAGA politics) associated with the gay tech mafia (Thiel, Altman, Cook, etc.) seems to have infiltrated our national politics. But what a weird alliance with MAGA Christian nationalism (with the exception of the misogyny).

Extremely offensive illustrations, so offensive I won’t waste my time reading the article. Bezos, Zuckerberg, Gates, Musk. Yeah, gay mafia running the world <sarcasm>

If this image bothers you, it might be because it's homophobic. The handshake with watch is fine, the pants suggest a platonic or business relationship between gay men is not possible. Some won't realize this unless they imagine him shaking a woman's hand coming out from under a skirt

Um, no, he's not homophobic. I can assure you of that. However you ARE extraordinarily obtuse, and you're pretending that the salient feature of the image isn't even there. Just shut the fuck up if this is the best you can do.

This seems personal to you so sorry, I don't know who he is, I'm only talking about the image they chose to represent this writing. It's very specific to the point they're making but it's implications are much bigger than its context, and if you didn't notice it you probably haven't been hurt by it

Im pretty sure this image is homophobic and this is just a bunch of VCs claiming they didn't get funding cause thry didn't sleep with gay men I dunno with how the state is right now its WERID as fuck

Fascinating read. The real story isn't about rumor — it's how any tight-knit community (gay, Mormon, Stanford alumni) builds trust networks that compound into outsized influence. Would love to see similar analysis of other "invisible" professional networks.

We get it, he’s a gay tech “mogul”. But seriously, what does his sexual orientation have to do with anything. Unless TFA is attempting to make the point that it’s only gay men who are a problem? I can’t get behind the paywall to see. But, the teaser sure makes it seem that way.

might be uncomfortable to get into, but gay fascists are a historical phenomenon and their identity as gay men informs their particular fascism. understanding that is key to fighting them. (i have not read the article, so idk if that's their angle--hope so!)

What in the world is wrong with you? Who approved these overtly homophobic illustrations? It's really doubling down on the portrayal of gay men as if we're inveterate, uncontrollable sex fiends. When I meet another gay man, I can assure you, I don't whip out my penis to do a little quick docking.

As a gay person who has worked in technology (first educational IT, now tech industry), I can assure you that I've not felt in charge or elevated because of my identity. I'm much more often weighing how much I can or should say about stuff related to my identity.

Even being at a very supportive and kind workplace, my identity has not ever been a source of active empowerment. And at professional events (and just out and about in society), there are regularly situations where I have to weigh whether or not to out myself in casual conversation.

This article, based on lots of rumors — and far too many straight dudes insisting they're actually the ones being discriminated against — really doesn't capture my experience, nor that of any other gay coworkers or friends in the industry.

"Hey, should we cover the fact that billionaires and VC are an absolute plague upon everything and point out that as the common factor?" "No, let's feature some clown writing about how it's all because these few people are gay with some cartoonishly offensive imagery." Eat all the shit, @wired.com

Wow. Delete all this and apologize. I thought you were better than this. I mean, that image is just terrible and whoever approved that should lose their jobs. Seriously, I really thought you were better than this.
