I'm talking a bit about card alters in an upcoming video, so if you'd like to show off a few of your favroite card alters, post 'em here and be sure to tag/credit who altered them! #MAgicTheGathering

I really wanted to highlight a lot of people on my other post, but selfishly here’s some of my own as well that I’ve been working on. This community is full of so many inspiring artists and I really hope the work I’m doing gets me up to their level 🥰

So… it’s not an art alter of a card per sé but the commander of my goblin deck is Shattergang Brothers. I couldn’t justify putting Ignition Team in the 99 but I love the art so much (and that’s the first appearance of the brothers, right?) I let them vandalize their way into the command zone.

Hi Prof, I got into magic because of the art. My friends started playing and I was amazed at all the artist I would have never known about if they had never shared the game with me. I started making alters/proxies for them after college. Here are 2 I've done! Thank you for the community shout out.

One of my all-time favorites was my old beat up "well-played and well-loved" Doubling Season that I got altered in 2014 with a borderless frame treatment from Alters by MimiMunster. I don't believe she is active much anymore, but I will always treasure this piece I had commissioned from them.

My favs would be those two. Both were made by some good friends of mine (hard to tag). I’ve always called the Dragonborn champion Dovahkiin and I was so happy when I’ve got the alter. Azula was made out of her art card. It‘s my fav artwork of her, but borderless looks so much better as Commander.

An old @klugalters.bsky.social as well. I had these altered for my friend Jason Ford who 9-0ed day 1 of a legacy Grand Prix with these in his deck. (tl;dr version is that jason was not allowed to use them on day 2, and had to find a set of 'ordinary' goyfs). compare this to current SLs nowadays....

Hey Professor! Thank you for talking about the card altering community. I'm really looking forward to seeing your upcoming video. I'm an alterist who loves painting tiny details and animal artwork. Here are a few of my favorites I've painted. You can see more here: @baypaintstudios.com

I’ve been an alter collector for years; I’m about a third of the way to converting my Intet the Dreamer to all altered. A few of my favorites Trop by Dustin Brossard (I have a matched set with the three Temur duals) T&N by Felt Alters Orchard by Zack - Revelen’s Light I’m blanking on who did the Niv

Doran the Siege Tower was one of my first commanders, and is still my favourite to this day. My youngest daughter made a version for me and it is the version I use in games! Bonus points that Doran is so well-known they hardly need the text box!

Hey Prof! I'm definitely more of a proxy artist, turning my bulk bin into Canadian Highlander cards, but have been getting into true alters and painting tokens on physical medium the last few months. I was primarily a digital artist over the Covid years, so physical alters have been a fun challenge

I collect Playtest cards for my cube, and get various artists to give them beautiful art! Rinta: Modfly Rafi: Dominick Mayer Disciple of Vess: Magali Villeneuve Mox Painter: Stephanie Bouchard

Jessica Fletcher Murder She Wrote Azami by Julie White Elvish Spirit Guide "Lion's Eye Diamond" which is a joke I took way too far* by me. *Someone asked if I had a lions eye diamond for trade and I said I only had one proxied on a MP Elvish Spirit Guide and then made this and gave it to them.

I'd like to give a shout-out to timtam_alters on IG. She makes amazing work, translating her love for animals onto magic cards! She also livestreams making alters on Whatnot, and chat suggestions means they can sometimes get a little unhinged

logged back into bsky for this lol - i got alters of doctor doom, unrivaled (and related cards) as MF DOOM but since they havent arrived yet i only have these pics from the amazing artist u/Jygglewag on reddit! the separated pics are after changes and the pics of groups of 4 are before changes fyi

i also have this beautiful alela as kiki from kikis delivery service and a very cute hazel of the rootbloom from u/sidneileeart on reddit and a gorgeous ashling as calcifer from howls moving castle from thecuratorofcolor on ebay

I’ve gotten really into alters this year and they’ve really reinvigorated my love for the game. In a time where every card has 3 different arts and borders and special versions, I have loved these unique and truly special cards. Here’s a thread of everything I’ve picked up this year!

I apologize for the truly terrible lighting in my room in these pictures, I tried to do my best to capture just how gorgeous each and every alter I own is. Each is just as special to me as the last and they are truly even more gorgeous in person. I’m honestly getting a bit emotional posting this!

Hey could any artist or person recommend me an artist that can do an alter of Gathering Stone from Lorwyn Eclipse but with the art being Thanos putting a stone into the gauntlet. I guess it would be more of a proxy with a different art but regardless.

I don't do alters anymore but I was really proud of these ones. Sol Ring after Starry Night, a really clean border extension piece on this Animar, and a "repair" on a beaten up Jace the Mind Sculptor via border extension. Colour matching that one was HARD.

I got these from Alter Sleeves years ago to finish off my Mutate Tribal deck cause these were the only mutate cards that didn't have the special Ikora AltArt and they have been some of my favorite cards ever since :3

He's also helped me gift his work to people I care about. The Council of Four went to Spike Feeder Jim. Featuring my favorite pod to play in: Jim, Jeremy Noell, Olivia, and myself. The Inkshield was a gift to Sheldon Menery. An inkling of one of their cats. It's now in the possession of his widow.

Maddy absolutely COOKED with this set of five alters my partner got me for my Galea deck! I especially adore the Sol Ring and love busting it out to show them all off. I plan to keep adding more themed alters to the deck! 🥰 bsky.app/profile/clov...

Here's the final painting in this series, plus the photo of all 5 together. I really had a lot of fun, it's one of my favorite series, so i enjoyed choosing artwork to fit these cards (it was tough to narrow down choices!) See you all in 2026! :)

I figure you're looking for hand painted alters as opposed to digital but I alter most of my commander decks as well as my Innistrad Cube. I really like using special frames to give my cards a nice pop. I even have commissioned art for them, like the Ravnica signets that I had Innistradified.

This thread is both reason Secret Lairs exist and why we could have 3 times as many Secret Lairs (with lower print runs) and WotC would still be selling them. So many artists able to do so much with such tiny canvases.

I love altering my commanders! I’ve worked with several folks that I like a lot. Dreadmaw: Jesper Ejsing Rakdos, Sidisi, Boborygmos: Dave Lee, durdlingaround Phelddagrif: MRBAlters Octavia: JomAlters Phelddagrif: Amy Weber Keruga: Dan Scott Winota: Modfly Alters

This is my best work so far, I think! I pride myself on doing alters that match the tone and identity of the original card. I'm sure Dr. Doof has a long story about how he's technically both a goblin and a pirate...

The Moat I purchased Altered, I don't know who the artist is. The story goes, the card was heavily damaged, so they altered it to cover the damage. I love it so much. Included a photo of the back to show the wear.

Something to note is the different mediums people use for card alters. I like using acrylic gouache which has a chalk texture and is hyper matte while still being an acrylic paint, but fluid acrylic seems to be the industry standard followed by posca pens and acrylic markers.

A lot of my collection I have loose provenance information like an eBay seller who may not have been the artist. Electrolyze - Jacob Ruiz; Archaeomancer - gelve0; Rewind - dstarseller; Condescend - cmtrading1970

Here is a thread of an ongoing project of mine to make an entire Bug-type Pokèmon deck! Artists credited throughout. bsky.app/profile/sapp...

In December 2021, I began a quest: Build a Magic the Gathering Commander deck inspired by my love of Bug Pokémon. This deck is a living, growing art project and gift to a younger me who did everything to survive. Grist, the Hunger Tide Vespiquen S2 Alters www.facebook.com/profile.php?...

Not exactly sure if you'd call these alters but friend said to share. I've been doing woodburned tokens for past few months; some are based on existing tokens, some from other IP, some original. Still developing skills but some turn out insanely good and I'm proud with my progress

Just started making alters. Brand new. Fresh meat. But, have been drawing for about 20ish years now since I was a teenager. Taking the fine lines I can do with pencil and pens and trying to do that with paint is tricky, BUT I AM UP FOR THE CHALLENGE.

I’m a tad late, but I do want to show off some alters. First I have two done by @foxnoctom.bsky.social who not only made a wonderful Celebi/Ilex Shrine for my Go-Shintai deck, but also did a pair of Slimefoot and Squees for me and my best friend. I also got an Espurr Sentinel from them!

Yeah, I know I’m not really in the PWP circle anymore, so it would be news to you. Your art of him does make me tear up every so often, you did such an amazing job. Also, I didn’t have it on my phone, but your Kogla alter of Meshu is still the best gift I’ve ever been given.

I have yet to explore methods of translating my designs onto actual cards, as to qualify as a legal alter, but for now, here are my designs in what I call "digital alters" (An exploration of alternative printings, really) I hope perhaps one day I could help design cards for a TCG.

My friend did this alter of Garruk, Cursed Huntsman several years ago, turning he and his two Wolf tokens into Wes and his Espeon and Umbreon from my favorite video game of all time, Pokemon Colosseum! You can find her as brina.alters on Instagram, where she's currently a prodigious tattoo artist!
