Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico may be upsetting to some, writes @giladedelman.bsky.social, but “in a democracy, values are determined by majority rule, and they don’t shift in only one direction. They can shift back”:

🙄 President Felonious Fart has decided to misname the Gulf of Mexico. Nobody else agrees or accepts this except bootlicking neo-fascists and cowards in the media. Which are you? 🙄

Crazy how reactionary centrists always mention 1984 whenever someone says a pronoun but then turn around and say “this isn’t the right fight what’s wrong with you” when actual blatant newspeak rears its head

It's not so much "upsetting" as it is "the delusional POTUS is using this to attack Constitutional rights". He's not "owning the libs", he's a mad king. It goes beyond partisanship.

1) Democracy doesn't mean one can do whatever one wants 2) US Presidents are not elected by the majority; there is no majority rule in a place where gerrymandering is pervasive and 1 person ≠ 1 vote

This is precisely one of the many fights worth having. You media outlets caving to this stupidity only serve to bolster his belief he can do whatever he wants. This falls into the totality of the issue akin to "first they came for the immigrants, but I'm not an immigrant..."

A lot of stuff Trump is doing can serve as smoke screens and distractions but it all still needs our attention. We shouldn't be normalizing the stupid grandstanding games he plays. We need to be outraged at ALL of his insanity because complacency and ignorance has led us right into fascism.

“Trump makes them harder still by blowing past all standards of reasonableness or good faith, leaving high-minded institutions struggling to adapt.” Another “Trump rattles annoying liberals” article. No elaboration about Trump’s intentions and motives. Irrelevant.

Values are NOT determined by majority rules. We literally have a Constitution to stop the Tyranny of the Majority. Tocqueville? Look him up. He saw that public opinion could become an all-powerful force, and that the majority could tyrannize unpopular minorities and marginal individuals.

What you are seeing is a conservative movement that is not going to follow the law if it gets in their way because they know the law only works if everyone abides by it. There is no recourse in our system for the wholesale abandonment of the rule of law by a ruling party.

I don’t give a fuck about Trump and his bullshit decision. What I care about are all of the supposed beacons of journalistic integrity falling right in line with his craven bullshit. WHAT ARE YOU FUCKING DOING? It’s fucking disgusting and you should be fucking embarrassed and ASHAMED.

I’m paraphrasing another user, but this just tells me you’re willing to acquiesce to fascism in advance because I cannot trust you to not accept the absolute nonsense coming from this fascist. Fight. Everything. It all matters.

I am really tired of editors who think their audience can't tell the difference between contrarian engagement bait and useful, independent thoight

No one asked for the Gulf of Mexico to be nicknamed 'Gulf of America' and the thing most Americans want is stability, not random renamings of international bodies of water. That's not how this works, and has nothing to do with democracy. Stop justifying fascism.

Why do you have to 'pick" fights? Just fight everything that's wrong? If you make ten consecutive false statements, is the last one true because of the "pick a fight" rule? Have some integrity. "Gulf of Mexico" first appeared on a world map in 1550 a couple of centuries before the US existed.

Man I missed the part of there election cycle where this was an issue anyone ran on or even brought up what so ever. I mean if it wasn't ever mentioned it would be asinine to claim the majority wanted this, so that happened, right?

Disingenuous argument. Denali was Denali before it was McKinley. Gulf of Mexico was *never* Gulf of America. The author would have us accept Trump renaming the Atlantic Ocean to the Great MAGA Sea. It's just nonsensical. We have to fight stupid, because accepting stupid just invites stupider.

The Atlantic has caught this illness from The New York Times. They have some of the best coverage available on the Trump era. And, for some reason, they feel the need to balance it with clickbait idiocy.

Everyone should ignore this stupid bs and focus on the important things: *Gutting Social Security and Medicare. *Trump ignoring court orders. * Replacement of non- political civil servants with unqualified sycophants. * Allowing an unelected immigrant billionaire to rob our Treasury. Etc, etc

Aside from ignoring the insanity of thinking that the US presidency is in charge of naming on world maps and using it as some reach around to exploit sensitive stuff, it seems premature to point out which piece of insanity should get plucked off the huge pile.

Wrong. It’s a bully trying to flex and he doesn’t have the authority. Fighting his every move that is not in the best interests of YS citizens is the duty of all of us. Bully’s push and push until someone says stop. If you say stop from the start, they don’t get a good foothold.

According to a lot of Republicans, democracy is not majority rule, but MOB rule, so they scream about America being a "republic" because they HATE democracy. In other words, screw the majority, even about values.

Sure, a president can rename a body of water. But calling it the “Gulf of America” is imperial arrogance. It’s not about legality—it’s Trump signaling that rules, allies, and reality don’t matter. It’s day one of “I can do whatever the hell I want.” Laugh it off at your own peril.

Um, the majority ISN'T ruling because the majority voted against FFOTUS. It was by about the same amount he THINKS gave him a "landslide" victory...
