Islam was born less than 2 degrees east of Judaism and Christianity, seems odd to think it's not part of Western civilization. Wouldn't an Eastern civilization be built on an expectation of a competent state amid our endless infinity of passages through this vast sea of suffering?
When Ghandi was asked by a British reporter, 'what do you think of Western Civilization?' - He replied, 'It sounds like a good idea, I think you should try it.'

I spent a week in Jakarta. Capped off a lovely month with most hospitable people. We
even stayed a night at a private home with a Muslim family. We were not killed in our sleep, robbed or raped. We were treated
Most kindly and got a glimpse of aspiring hard working people…
Who happen to be Muslim.
Of all the offensive and ignorant shit this guy has said over the decades the last straw for me was when he was being heckled and did that “hold me back or I’ll beat this guy” move. Unbelievably delusional, as only a privileged out of touch egomaniac could be.
1. Does Bill know what caused the Iranian theocracy to come into power?
2. This made me so happy when I saw it. Looks pretty much like any place in the world. --
3. Fuck him
The friendliness and the general same-as-us-ness is no surprise to me whatsoever, but I gotta admit I wasn't quite expecting *SO* many snappy dressers 😳
it's hilarious how often it happens even with his own audience, people forget to laugh at the obvious prompts and he has to tell them "it's time to laugh, that was a good joke everybody, laugh now"
Regardless of the civilization, we are always one calamity away from the next Dark Ages and the amount of time since Renaissance is only about 600 years, not a long time in the grand scheme. Western Civilization (the Church) fought scientific progress for a few hundred years before relenting.
The proof is basically in the pudding, Western Civilization mostly won out because it went through Enlightenment, Renaissance, and Reformation. That said, one could legitimately argue that Eastern Civilization (China and Japan) is now superior to either Western or Islamic.
It's been my default stance since Religulous and possibly before that, but just seeing clips of that movie locked it in for me.
And I considered myself an atheist at the time.
Oh absolutely, you can be an atheist and still think Maher is dogshit.
I'm just saying it wasn't any sort of religious reason that made me hate him for that movie. Arguably I was the intended audience at the time and it made me hate him (or hate him more/locked in the hatred, I forget).
