are we ready to talk about how zero suit samus was maybe the worst thing to happen to the metroid series or is zero mission still untouchable

As much as I like Zero Mission, yuppppp I'm also ever furious at Smash Bros for doing so much damage to Samus' character by using Zero Suit Samus as a generic femme fatale character. Absolutely the worst character assassination in Smash bar none.

ZM directly retcons the plot in ways those games don't, it lays the groundwork for OM far more than those do

it's weirdly objectifying, completely kills zero mission's pacing for a shitty stealth section, and they kept shoehorning it into every single game and it looks like ass in half of them

the big issue imo is mostly just that after you get it back the final boss and extra lap for item cleanup just isn't very fun

to give retro some credit here this 100% wasn't their idea (and the model was rushed) and they redeemed themselves with prime 4 (the one good thing I'll say about that game)

also for years they kept using it for cameos in other games, why does link get a normal fit but samus gets the skintight bodysuit

the end screen outfit rewards were always incredibly uncomfortable don't get me wrong but at least they were a decidedly out of game thing

ppl often say samus is an example of a good female gaming protag and i agree samus is a good character and female but i do not think her being a woman is handled well at all actually i think its gotten better over time tho i love Dread Samus personally smth i wish we got more of but wont is video

essays about how nintendo handles gender and stuff because it's clear a shift is occurring as many of the oldheads retire or lose control and younger devs (such as splatoon devs) have more power in creative decisions, bc there is a lot of bad and a lot of good from the different teams at ninty

Not only is she treated like a piece of meat for the male gaze but she's also, like, somehow not irreversibly scarred from having to have her suit SURGICALLY REMOVED FROM HER BODY!! She should be the kind of person who makes the room fall silent when she enters with or without the armor.

it's honestly so wild to me, on some level dread at least attempts to continue it but even the metroid suit at the end still feels like a bit of a step back from what fusion was doing imo

i have never played a metroid game, but here’s my opinion anyway: it seems like they made power suit samus a character first, and a woman second, which is good. but then whichever nerd is in charge decided to remedy that with zss, which is bad

i dont hate the concept of a part of samus' suit under the power armour that still has some protective capabilities and allows her to be more nimble and ill go so far as to say i like the ending segment of zero mission but im not a fan of the actual design

from a gameplay standpoint i like what they were going for but narratively i hate how small it makes the world feel and the ridley robot is such an ass final boss that it kinda ruins the whole thing

No lie when the game first came out, I was shocked by the Zero Suit segment. This is after the original game! Wow! Okay, got the new suit, let's kill this robot! That was the final boss. The game is over. That was it? Oh...................

in the zero mission concept art they specifically put a cap on her heels too idk what they were thinking with this one

Oh my god, yes. I’ve been saying that since maybe a month after ZM came out. I didn’t hate it within the game itself, but when I saw what it did to the fandom, I was mortified. Sure, we’ve always had Samus outside the suit, but shit got *bad* with the zero suit.

Idk that I'd say it's the *worst* thing but I do hate it. Like, both from a practicality perspective and from a fanservice perspective it seems obviously worse than, y'know, normal-ass underwear like she used to wear. But it's an infrequent enough appearance that I can roll with it.
