It’s odd to me to see people taking anthropic’s risk factors in its public disclosures at face value, when they’re written like the rest of anthropic’s doomerism—that is to say, highlighting how powerful and inevitable this technology is, and how crucial it is that only they be allowed to control it
“It could contribute to wealth inequality” would almost seem like the exception if it wasn’t understood by investors to mean that they could be richer than the rest of the plebs
I just saw someone saying that as anti-ai sentiment is an Elitist view, which lmao, but also a specifically American one; which ?????
I know accusing someone of being a bot is pretty overdone but if you’re pro-ai why wouldn’t you outsource being an annoying little noodle to the machine too
flashback to the time my friend was really excited about Walton Goggins being in the fallout show and I didn’t remember who Walton Goggins was so I thought Walton Goggins was just a character from the fallout games that was well beloved
Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called.
An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.
What I wrote about Gavin Newsom a year ago is never more applicable to several Democrats today.
I foresaw this coming, and I continue to hold this true.
Day 23 of drawing one insect order a day for #inktober 2026. Today I drew the twisted wing parasite species Stylops melittae.

found out that my mother in law decided she was aggressively pro trans rights literally by going, I don't know anything about this but everyone who is against trans rights is also against free school lunch, the issue I know and care a lot about, so this must be the correct way to feel about this
ive seen a few people say that they think using AI for code is less bad than using it for art, and like, there’s a part of me that sees it! code is supposed to be a series of outputs that work or don’t. deterministic, functional. I think it misses a lot of points, though.
I have been meaning to write about this for a month or so now but it breaks my heart. AI has infected every hobby. Everything is noise. It's hurting existing communities and trudging through the slop is exhausting.
So yeah idk I get the surface level “well I’ll boycott a game that uses it for art but not code”. But if you draw a line that includes some uses of genai but not others then sooner or later, one way or another, you’re gonna be moving that line.

But what makes me *despair* is when I feel like, despite that, nobody else cares enough to ask whether racing to replace ourselves with chatbots is doing ANY good, for us or our users. I can’t be the cynical curmudgeon and also the guy who wants the product he bags on to be held to a higher standard

But even setting that aside something Chris gets at great in this article is that programming, like most crafts, is social. It depends on communication and collaboration and there’s none to be had with people who don’t respect the skills enough to learn them.
Vibe coding replaces the human networks and human knowledge with an LLM scanning the entire system every time it needs to do something; it atomizes us when we desperately need to be social, when technology in specific desperately needs us to be social

First; as in any creative endeavors, the output is rarely exactly a spec. It’s a series of decisions you make consciously that shape the output. Maybe that means subtle differences in the product, maybe it means more maintainable codebases that result in fewer regressions.
The best programmers I know, in addition to knowing code fundamentals, know their domains. When they’re discussing a technical solution they say “ok but that breaks this niche business case that lives in a related repo”. the craft isn’t ones and zeros it’s turning them into a *thing* that is *used*
See now we're fucking talking
One of the only weapons we wield in this fight is our money and attendance, and if everyone involved with an event says "I'm not going unless you stop using AI" there's only two outcomes:
*No AI or No Convention*
Conventions are made by and for the community
One thing that's really Getting me today: Bioware being shuttered hurts, but it should hurt worse. We shouldn't be as numbed to venerable, beloved studios being torched for no reason by business idiots as we are. This deserves to be all anyone talks about for weeks, not forgotten in a day
it really does feel like they just got away with unprecedented amount of theft of expertise, and are now profiting off of it while replacing the professional opportunities for the very crafts and humans it trained on
I never thought I would see the concept of expertise get so devalued
"This work of fiction was designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various cultures, faiths, sexualities, and dental plan eligibilities."
I feel every time anyone writes "developed with a core team of XX" about a game, they have a responsibility to write "developed by YY developers with only XX developers being employed"
Been playing Computer Bloodborne. I thought I remembered how to play this game and then I got to FRC Amygdala and discovered my gems have been carrying me
i love when video games have a complex moral choice system like you get all the way to the end of the game doing basically the same thing but then it asks you if you want to be good or evil and then if you pick evil it shows you a sad scene and if you pick good it shows you a happy scene

eternal darkness gets remembered for its fourth wall-breaking sanity gimmick, which admittedly is a lot of fun, but I think the real ingenuity is the narrative structure
Eternal Darkness, GameCube
Silicon Knights, 2002
Re-post because I accidentally deleted the original >_> Anyway, Eternal Darkness is great. Deserves a remaster, or at least a re-release on Switch.
Not only does it let you settle into its locations over centuries, it cleanly escapes the horror game trap where you can’t ever die for real since most protagonists need to be there the whole game. Instead eternal darkness’s player characters only have a shelf life of the current chapter and then!!
