once a year the brunchlords at Semafor host a "restoring trust in news" conference where they unironically platform most of the people responsible for destroying trust in news, then lob softball questions at them this year's lineup is a real doozy (notice the complete absence of indie media)

And, just scrolled down to confirm that the one person I thought might offer some much needed pushback is there on behalf of one of the sponsors (the Knight Foundation) and will presumably be acting as a moderator, not offering their own perspective.

in fact, one of the VERY FIRST THINGS Semafor did after getting $25 million in seed money was to host a "restoring trust in news" conference where they platformed Tucker Carlson as a serious journalist Ben Smith peppered him with softballs on a weird video stream from his Hamptons closet

last year's Semafor "restoring trust in news" included names like overt white supremacist Megyn Kelly (who of course didn't have to answer any questions about her racism or her overt destruction of trust in news) and Fox News heavy hitter Bret Baier

techdirt.comSemafor Keeps Hosting “Restoring Trust In News” Events Stocked With Known Right Wing BullshittersBack in 2022, former New York Times reporter Ben Smith and friends launched a new media company named Semafor on the back of $25 million in donations. You might recall that one of th…

the more private money flowed Ben Smith's way, the less capable he was of actually supporting or doing actual journalism, to the point where it feels like satire I do feel like he's at least partially TRYING to be awful to drum up interest in an otherwise inane event

a last aside it's kind of disappointing this performative brunchlord cack is being hosted by The Knight Foundation, who generally does good work on this front. That money should be going to people ACTUALLY restoring trust in news.

Brendan Carr??? Why on earth would the guy spearheading the censorship and destruction of independent media at the behest of the regime be invited to the “Restoring Trust in Media” confab?

indie media is also the most likely to point out in a very public way that the hosts are full of shit and big contributors to the problem

he's there so Ben Smith can pepper him with a few softballs while pretending it's a "grilling" It's credibility kayfabe

Welker and a Fox News lady are the only people who could even vaguely be considered actual journalists (I guess Murray sort of), and they're both hosts of talk/interview shows. No actual print journalists other than Murray.

yeah they're not actually interested in journalism they're interested in creating a sort of credibility simulacrum

The way they continuously name things the opposite of their intent is fucking infuriating. “Destroying meaning in language.” “Putting the foxes in charge of the henhouses.” And so many other options for a more factual descriptive term.

I'm curious how any of the supposedly serious people even attend with Carr being a fellow headliner. Any real journalist would be boycotting that

they will operate under the pretense that it's ok he's there because Ben Smith will "force him to answer hard-hitting questions," which, of course, he won't.

I don't think it's possible to restore trust in any media outlet that sided with, collaborated with, apologized for, sane-washed or caved to Trump. They just can't come back from that betrayal of the American people. Some things are simply unforgivable.
