how compromised is lifestyle journalism these days? well, you see, pr firms are now developing platforms specifically designed to match sellout hacks with hotels happy to put them up, and then *openly pitching that platform* as a neat-o new service.

U.S. outlets simply do not have the courage or competence of Haaretz. I’ll never forget this group of headlines that all ran on Oct. 8-10 2023—within days of the attack on Israel and mentally comparing them to our media post-9/11. Look at that Oct. 8 editorial!!!

UPDATE: They put BooFest on Broad on da teevee! Big thanks to @12onyourside.com for spotlighting our neighborhood's efforts to make our streets safer for trick-or-treaters.

UPDATE: BooFest 2026 has secured its signed street-closure permit from Richmond Police Department! That was the last major hurdle between us and a car-free Halloween and the East End, and we just cleared it this morning. We're shutting down three blocks of East Broad on October 31st from 4-9pm!

lol another guy replied to this trying to argue about copyright law and caught a block. for anybody else tempted: i know llms may be deemed legal, but please try to grasp that a) that doesn't make it not theft & b) people who work on this stuff understand it as theft. www.404media.co/doom-loop-op...

the answer is pretty clarifying for thinking about the political power of transformative technology, i think. there are vast fortunes to be made stealing from the workers of the world, and political systems are rarely equipped to stop it even if individual politicians want to (which they rarely do)

idk man. it would have been nice if these companies all just collapsed under the weight of their own ambition and i guess some of them still might but so long as anthropic remains profitable it is doing so on the back of labor it did not pay for and i think that’s bad.

Dave Infante@dinfontay.com

but if we're encouraging people to reconsider their priors on ai, i think it would be pretty cool if we could maybe not lose sight of the fact that this technology was willfully built on mass theft. a lot of reporting just kinda takes this as a given and doesn't bother foregrounding it. seems bad!

the most interesting question for me with ai was never “does this shit work” (though in many cases it seems not to lol) or “can it make money” (though in many cases it seems not to lol) but “why is it allowed to just rip off all our work and then sell it back to us”

but i did, and one of the lessons i took from it was that productivity gains from technology can be real (in the way that they appear to be with claude code, for example) and also degenerative and exploitative at the same time. many such cases!

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Tangential to the Cheesecake Factory talk is that their workers are genuinely elite tier 1 operators in the food service industry. I have a friend who manages bars and restaurants and he will instantly hire anyone with Cheesecake Factory experience. They are like the Marines minus the war crimes
