People left Friendster for MySpace and MySpace for Facebook because the sites became occasionally unreliable. Slower, occasionally a page wouldn't load. That's all it took. The idea that people are duty-bound to stay on a fucking social media platform for ANY reason is straight-up nuts.

Funnily enough, the original novel was very much not satire. When I was in the Marines, it was on the official recommended reading list. When the film script writers and Paul Verhoven saw the story, they couldn’t picture it as anything BUT satire.

Back in the day people would leave forums just because the top mod got a girlfriend, talked to much about his girlfriend, or appointed his girlfriend as a mod.... lot of forum girlfriend drama.

Nowadays, people’s entire identity and purpose comes from the platform they’re on versus it being an extension of who they are. Without it, they don’t have the mechanisms to feel satisfied or valued or loved so they take it out on everyone.

It's funny -- five nines seems kind of boring in this day and age. It's a big event when one of the heavy hitters go down! Reddit does every so often and seems impervious to losing users that way, and ofc most folks are thrilled when Outlook/Teams have trouble.
