I'm lucky my brain only made me do this with like... The Complete Works of Shakespeare and In Search of Lost Time and not some utter nonsense like these books or the Bible.
Should probably have spaced them out with something in between. For example, after I have read three Hours Heresy books, I read three Eisenhorn books. A very varied diet, you know?
They are fun reads
90% of them are also awfully written, also shoutout to some of the most racist stereotypical audiobooks to any books that involve the "Mongolian" space marine chapter
In honor of this post the first time I saw it, I read the first volume. It was easily in the bottom 5% of all the books I've ever read, but it had a sort-of interesting hook at the end.
I didn't finish the first chapter of the second.

I grew up with Legends but I much prefer Canon. Yeah, it's kind of hit or miss but there's plenty to love. I'm reading Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire right now and it's incredible!
i love telling people about the diversity alliance arc and how at one point the young reader books were about a terrorist organization trying to use bioweapons to start a race war
did they have that thing where multiple authors would feud via their self inserts? there was a period where that was at the forefront and it's very funny
I used to but I dislike it now for a simple reason: Either do the old thing justice, or make a new thing.
Psuedo-Thrawn not being actually Thrawn, and Dark Troopers being essentially a throwaway gag detracts from both the old and new.
in 2014 disney blew up the entire expanded universe only to make a new one that is equally as convoluted, inaccessible and disliked in under a third of the time. there are now two universes full of nonsense star wars lore largely made by the same people. another successful disney star wars move
Nothing changed for the EU in 2014. The EU was always non-canon. They just said books, comics, TV shows, and movies going forward would for the first time all be canon.
Ok just to be super clear. My understanding is that all of the other stuff is the EU. Legends is *not* canon. Canon is canon. So what is Legends Canon?
There's a reason GW are re-releasing a set of something like 10 HH books that it says is the core story. So I guess officially the rest is filler which is true for a fair few of them.
I read one where the entire stated premise was that the legion members where finnaly going to meet there primarch and new generation of Marines. And both sides talk about how that meeting was going to go for the whole book. Only for them to meet on the last couple pages and just go "hey".
No. There are 53 books in the core Horus Heresy series, plus a further 11 in The Siege of Terra and 21 in The Primarchs.
(Not counting the audio dramas and uncollected short stories and novellas).
We should get a class action suit going for psy dmg those books caused.
Christopher Tolkien: “Frank Herbert’s notes? With enough content to finish the series, create numerous prequels, including an HBO show?
Brian Herbert: “Yes”
CT: “May we see them after meticulous editing and care?
BH: “No”
Personally, I love the first 2, think the 3rd is pretty good, and the 4th is really weird and interesting, but book 5 was kinda really bad, and then book 6 is slightly better.
I’m 100 pages into the final book and Han and Leia are narrowly escaping YV right on their heels after a military disaster and I’m like this was happening 17 books ago, can we get any progression on the story here?
I used to think the Vong were scary and cool growing up, but in retrospect, they were trying too hard to make them edgy. We dodged a bullet when they were cut from The Clone Wars.
Rebel Dream and Rebel Stand were probably the only two books out of the entire Vong series were the only ones I remember at all enjoying reading, and probably just because Aaron Allston wrote them and his humor always hits for me. I don't miss any of the rest.
It’s a very, VERY mixed bag.
For sure.
While it’s not part of the series, I ADORE Rogue Planet (the only connections are Vergere (and she’s not even in the story proper) and Zonama Sekot), mainly because I’m a big fan of the author (Greg Bear) and his other work.
Those are my all time favorite star wars series and I think Star By Star was the best individual star wars story ever written until Andor. But you have to like Star Wars as military sci-fi for them to hit.
A friend put me onto Honor Harrington, I came back to him after reading the first like, "that was an insufferable multi-chapter lecture on Warshawski sails just for 30 pages at the end that really slapped" and he was like "yeah basically but the end is REALLY good."
That is basically the entire franchise, though it gets quite a bit snappier once you get in the habit of just skimming over any sections involving measurements. I get it, Weber, you did all the math! I don't need to know the exact travel time and distance of every missile!
