but hey consumers won't have hard drives or ram for the rest of this decade so there's that (imagine all the great deals on barely used server hardware when this bubble bursts like the subprime fraud)

Every photo I have ever seen of Clammy Sam looks like an AI image generated with this prompt: Man in a room with a dog and a jar of peanut butter surprised by his wife arriving home 45 minutes early

Well of course. AI is a tool that lets people make their own stuff for free, instead of having to pay for it... Why would anyone expect that to MAKE money?

But the oligarchs keep getting richer on just the promise of total control from their scam for it. bsky.app/profile/gizm...

AI Added 'Basically Zero' to US Economic Growth Last Year, Goldman Sachs Says https://gizmodo.com/ai-added-basically-zero-to-us-economic-growth-last-year-goldman-sachs-says-2000725380

I wonder how much domestic productivity we’ve lost in hours stuck in AI trainings and correcting the mistakes made by hastily-adopted, unnecessary ad-ons

Not to mention the time lost to clicking out of AI pop-ups and trying to figure out how to disable it all. I feel like I spend half my workday trying to stop AI from writing for me

True. The question is however if AI in the current form of LLM chatbots is actually such a technology. Specialized AI for certain tasks and professions are definitely a productivity booster but the positive impact on most peoples tasks is negiblible because of LLMs limitations and unreliability.

That is one question, but regardless of what is the answer to that question (and I doubt we can have answer in less than a decade), it would not be at all surprising if productivity benefits of any new technology won’t show in statistics for years.

Sure. I can however also imagine negative impacts to certain professions only showing up after years, e.g. collapse in labor marked for lawyers and coders because entry level jobs get slashed for several years during the current ai craze which leads to missing 2nd-level applicants later.

Good question. While the West is building massive data centers, China is moving toward putting AI on the "edge"; that is, creating robotics and all kinds of smart devices. There are benefits to both approaches, but perhaps the productivity gains will be visible sooner in China?

Not only has it not improved productivity, but it has worsened quality. And even worse, it’s limiting professional growth, because people take shortcuts instead of learning actual skills.

But humans don't make profit for like the first 20years.... 🤦‍♂️ bsky.app/profile/math...

Math F1@mathf1.bsky.social

WTAF?🤦‍♂️ Altman thinks ChatGPT’s energy discussions are “unfair" especially “how much energy it takes to train an AI model relative to how much it costs a human to do 1 inference query. It takes a lot of energy to train a human, It takes like 20yrs of life & all the food you eat before you get smart."

Don’t give AI and Sam Altman too little credit. They didn’t just add “basically zero” to the economy, it also depleted our natural resources, raised our energy costs, and stole our intellect and creativity. Heckuva job, Sammy.

it only serves to exaggerate his contribution (actually negative) to AI, feed his ego, & inflate the value of OpenAI (& his wealth). He hasn't added any value to AI, he is just a VC. He is most responsible for the spending race in AI, which was a marketing gimmick to help raise $$ & OAI valuation.

On the other hand every time I see a picture of him it reminds me he is empty headed numpty who isn't qualified to run a Sacramento Arby's and only got into his position and wealth by manipulating gullible old men

@akhilrao.bsky.social Given this and low unemployment numbers, would this be what we'd expect to see if the tech's value is going to labor? Workers putting in same number of hours, getting paid the same, but productivity benefits are going to labor in the form of free time or flexible time?
