Unjust society is unsustainable -> democracy is non-negotiable.
Sustainability transition & modeling circular economy @ Finnish Environmental Institute (Syke) as a profession; defence of Finland and democracy as a hobby.
A #MEGATHREAD : my threads about #Defence of #Finland & #NATO 's Northern/Eastern Flank.
Bits of #History, #SecurityPolicy & #Strategy too - and archived Twitter threads from my archival account (@jmkorhonen-twitter.bsky.social), so you don't have to go to the Bad Place.
In somewhat random order.
I remember a mention of an exercise where the unnamed enemy had made landings in Murmansk and the White Sea and after reaching lake Ladoga made a sudden turn to the west.
looking at Tiny London (an isometric London map made with image generation) and remembering the Baidu 2.5D map from 2010. This was pretty cool at the time; apparently made from 3D assets in a semi-automated way. baike.baidu.com/en/item/Baid... 📊
Norwegian bus operator Unibuss backed out of a purchasing deal with Chinese manufacturer CRRC, after security issues with other Chinese buses delivered earlier. They elected to buy from Polish manufacturer Solaris instead. Now CRRC/YES-EU has brought a lawsuit. www.nrk.no/stor-oslo/av...
And have joy. Show genuine joy.
A friend of mine said she was optimist because the street demonstrations were sexy (she was fawning over a shirtless man who climbed a subway station).
But there's music, there's dancing, there's joy. People went to meet people they already like or could like.
OTD in 1981 “whisky on the rocks”. Soviet submarine S-363 ran aground after “navigational error” in Sweden.
My navy converts ships to submarines and submarines to ships. My trolls are not snowflakes about this.
"Helposti ajatellaan, että tarvitaan ruokaa, vettä ja terveydenhuoltoa, ja digitaalisuutta ja somea käsitellään uhkana. Mutta ne liittyvät pitkälti jaksamiseen, Hartikainen sanoo"
Pärjäisitkö ilman päivän annosta somea ja digilaitteita? Entä viikon tai kaksi?
"The report found Israeli authorities and forces had continued to 'commit genocidal acts' even after the so-called ceasefire in Gaza, 'with the intent to destroy the Palestinian people'."
No surprise that this got hardly any mainstream coverage. #GazaGenocidewww.nine.com.au/world-news/m...
The lessons from Brazil and Serbia?
Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right.
Don't appease.
Don't triangulate.
Don't grovel.
Don't say they have "legitimate concerns".
Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.
Tämä. Israelin demograafinen tulevaisuus ei näytä mahdollistavan nykymuotoisen järjestelmän ylläpitoa.
Israelin nykyinen järjestelmä kaatuu ulkoiseen ja sisäiseen paineeseen.
Kaskeala is BTW the man to thank for ending the ancient FDF practice of equipping conscripts with the oldest, most threadbare equipment, while the best kit was squirreled away for the “rainy day” (chances of steel rain).
Now conscripts get mostly new kit, which is then washed, repaired and stored.
This comes from the recent memoirs of admiral Juhani Kaskeala, the commander of Finnish #Defence Forces between 2001-2009.
Even he first learned of the plan when he found it from the commander’s personal safe after opening it for the first time. His predecessor had not even hinted of it.
As someone who did conscript service in faded m/62 cotton camouflages (with a total of 3 usable pockets; and no one in the platoon had matching shades), this was a genius move.
It cost practically nothing but VERY GREATLY enhanced the image and status of the FDF, both internally and externally.
We also had grey m/39 fur hats (which were great in winter TBH), m/44 or m/60 day packs (okay, they were also great in their simplicity), and for a while I carried a sniper rifle assembled from ancient Mosin Nagant parts - I swear the receiver had a stamp “1893.”
All this in 2000-2001!
An earlier plan, the first to be drafted after the Second World War, was similarly most secret, and codenamed even more blandly as ”Fuel procurement.”
In official exercises, Finnish forces defended the western coast and the city of Vaasa against land invasion from the south, and landings by Sweden.
TIL the extremely secret (circulation only to named individuals in top brass) 1966 plan of defending #Finland against “an attack or coup attempt that originates from the eastern and/or southern direction” was codenamed KALERVO,
which is inordinately funny in ways that unfortunately defy translation

If you rotate the map 90° you may understand what they were actually practicing.
This state of affairs lasted until 2022. In refresher exercises of sufficiently high levels, we were even told to rotate the map in our heads; at lower levels it was just implied.
But that was never written down.
Okay, in this case the machine did plausibly defeat our tactical encryption: ChatGPT did have some good ideas.
As the code name of your most secret and important plan, Kalervo, a man’s name, might be about equal to
NORBERT.

Every victory for #democracy is a victory for every democrat everywhere.
That’s one good reason to celebrate the wins, even small ones - to encourage others you may never have even heard of!

Congratulations to this lucky daddy cat! He gets to punch his #TNR ticket today 🎟️
I believe this is the daddy of the Cinder Block Babies & the most recent group of kittens in my neighborhood. Now we gotta get those little mommy cats 🐈⬛

Day 1706 of my 3 day war. Vucic lost in Serbia, Bolsonaro lost in Brazil and Donald couldn't rig a casino he owns, never mind the midterms.
I remain a master strategist.
Night night sweet dreamies
Never feel you have to hide the hurt you carry
Your feelings are not a weakness, nor are they something to be ashamed of
They are simply part of being human, and even on your hardest days, you are no less worthy of love, kindness and understanding.
Good evening! This week's theme is Mist and Fog.
