We believe an open web starts with choice. That includes AI models. We’re excited to be partnering with Mistral to bring open-source AI to Firefox Smart Window beta and expand access to France, with French-language support.

This is a fully optional experience that you have to turn on yourself and is separate from your regular browsing. In fact, you don't have to use AI features in Firefox period. You can choose to enable or block features entirely in Settings > AI Controls.

The fact you’re burying this in the comments versus explaining it in its own post says a lot. Though, to be sure, the best thing you could do is just abandon the AI integration entirely…

It's a bundled feature that cannot be uninstalled... "Optional" is when something needs to be downloaded separately. Like ad blockers.

Fuck off. It was optional to get into AI and Firefox keeps choosing wrong - again and again. Ask any regular person who has ever used Firefox if they give a rat's ass about its profit margin. Or maybe, do a search on your own browser to see the kids ChatGTP has killed... STOP FEEDING PEOPLE CANCER!

The fact you are supporting anti-environmental, anti-copyright, antu-freedom garbage AT ALL is the problem. Giving people the choice to do something bad is a bad thing, period. Firefox. PLEASE reconsider and completely remove AI. Please.

Who cares? The thing is, you're using donations towards funding AI. No one wants it. It just makes your browser slow and steals data. I want to know WHY you did this.

I would prefer to use a browser which lacks the option to turn AI features on. If there's an option to enable AI features, I'll be constantly afraid it's been switched on by "accident". (This isn't a hypothetical concern; it happened to me with VS Code *all the time*, until I stopped using it.)

I turned all the AI shit off in the desktop Chrome web browser... and somehow it's still turned on in a bunch of places like in the location/search/omnibox and in the developer tools/inspector/javascript console, despite these dozens of "features" being set to 'Disabled' in chrome://flags/

Mozilla team... PLEEEASE withdraw from investing into this. Close the Beta and pronounce it "a tough decision to retire the AI". We don't want this. Some people MIGHT have mentioned it, but look how many more people are complaining NOW!!! 😔 Please... be on the right side of history... 💔

Is it actually gonna be a choice this time or are the "features" gonna be automatically enabled and then the onus put on the user to go in and disable them? Again. (btw this sucks. terrible decision, fire whoever thought it was a good idea)

Doomsday. That's where we're going. AI companies are totally fine with it. Billionaires playing gods. Building data centers, wasting our water, power, large open areas, forests, everything. It's destruction. AI is plagiarism engine too, stealing from us, fed with copyrighted materials

with no permission. AI is surveillance, AI is power to governments and big companies. The general public uses AI for generating slop, claiming they are artists, they made videos, images, 3D models, etc... they did not. They are not artists.

"The AI race" is just companies around the world experiencing FOMO and throwing a ton of money, quality control, and consumer goodwill down the toilet just so they can say they use AI while techbros laugh at how easy it actually is to scam them.

People who recommend waterfowl, are you sponsored by them? Because, it makes no sense as they also have optional ai features, don't they? Why do you think it's better?

Looking at their models, I wouldn't mind having local versions of Voxtral to provide speech input and high quality text to speech. Those are things that a small, local, LLM can do easily without becoming a plagiarism machine or requiring excessive data centers.

Possibly the worst choice that could've been made. No one wants ai models built into their browser, it's obstructive and kills the planet for no good reason other than showing how lazy and money-hungry of a corporation firefox really is. Fuck you.

Are your bosses stupid? Like genuinely, have they not spoken to a living person lately? The titanic that is ai is sinking and theyre like "oh dude how much are tickets??" Lmfao

can you guys stop i miss when firefox evangelism was easy. "look how much better it is!" now it's "sigh, yes, okay, but,"

based on interviews mozilla hired AI fans and then their userbase started increasing instead of decreasing for the first time in a decade and they are convinced there's causation there, so probably not

why would there be?? chrome has had an AI button right in the fucking address bar for months

SPOILER ALERT: most people don't want AI. It's one of the few things most people are UNIVERSALLY agreeing on that aren't people that can't think for themselves. stop forcing AI upon us, we DO NOT WANT TO USE IT. I have used Mozilla since '06, and will be moving on. Good job team!

I don't want any of this shit in my browser! I don't care if I can opt out! I'm not stupid enough to think you're not gonna try and sneak it in anyway! Take it out! I don't want it! Get it the fuck out of there!

I'm going to block them, but just in case someone sees the long comment chain they have with the other person, tldr, here's the end result. So yeah, they're pedantic and don't believe in wage theft.

Please don't waste your funding for this senseless AI Goose chase. There are real issues in the bug tracker that are half a decade old. How about tackling those?

Oh come on! Do you know how many years, no, DECADES I've used Firefox?! I hope your CEOs or whoever pushed this through will never succeed at anything ever again, even making toast.

I want you to keep this as far from me as possible and the moment I have to do anything to get rid of it, you will be uninstalled on every one of my devices. Compose yourself accordingly.

Does waterfox carry over like saved passwords and credit cards, have auto strong passwords etc? Sync between desktop and phone? I'm not married to Firefox specifically but those features are so important for me

We believe an open web starts with a choice. That includes shoving AI down your throat despite you consistently showing you don't want it We're excited to be partnering with the CSAM machine to bring 'features' you never wanted that spy on your every action and keystroke Translated that for you.

This is a fully optional experience that you have to turn on yourself and is separate from your regular Firefox browsing.

They did say that if you’ve already turned off AI setting in Firefox that you won’t have future ones turned on for you. …Not that I trust them or anything, mind you.

Don't worry! You don't have to use the feces covered room. Huh? Oh, no, the room is still there and we didn't clean up the feces. We've just given you a key to lock the door to it. Don't worry, we don't have a copy of the key and we promise the room is air tight and the smell won't escape.

Ask your new friends to translate this : "Allez bien vous faire foutre bande de connards !" Users don't want your shit AI gen.

Waterfox is basically Firefox but with no AI (they actually took an anti-AI stance from what I read on their website) + has already an in-built AdBlock. Tried it today because of these dogshit news, and it's honestly really good! Lots of Firefox add-ons work on it too.
