every single person pushing this angle is intellectually bankrupt. The data centers being built today are for NOTHING other than AI compute, and are much, much larger and more destructive. If none of them got built, services like online banking, social media and streaming would continue to function.

Even if they stopped generative AI for a day, it would push a lot of customers to use local AI and realise that they don’t really need to spend 200 a month on Claude pro to get good looking writing answers.

There would definitely be a blip in some industries if all the AI data centers were knocked out as a lot of key infrastructure (in the UK at the very least) have bet the farm on GenAI & forced it into a bunch of core processes. Worth a little pain to wipe out GenAI tho & on the heads of corps be it.

It's also funny because it'd absolutely destroy the big tech. It'd show people and businesses how much they rely on things they don't own. Everyone would start looking for the alternatives for all the cloud-based software as service solutions they're using.

For a company who relies on cloud services to operate? Not really. In both cases, money stops flowing due to external factors - if it’s malice or incompetence, it doesn’t matter that much. If it’s in the middle of the working day, the result is similar.

when our supreme court minister left us a month without twitter, most of us didn't go back to twitter. so uhhh bring it on I guess ("it" being "going without AI specifically")

Given that the expenses of the AI companies are too high already, I have no idea how and who is going to afford to pay to use all these data centres that are planned to be built. The government is literally the only one who can from what I can see.

Non-AI datacenters rarely operate at peak load, because they're sized to the max amount of web traffic they expect, not the average. Even a lot of AWS servers are idle most of the time, because orgs reserve compute in case they need it.

By comparison AI datacenters run at max load 24/7 to get as much AI training as they possibly can. Which previously you only did if you were mining bitcoin.

This is like the car industry refusing to make anything other than stretch humvees and saying "OH I GUESS WE'LL JUST TAKE AWAY ALL THE TAXIS THEN, SEE HOW YOU LIKE THAT"

When you hear "NVIDIA" and "data center" in the same breath, know that this person is not talking about VOIP or Instagram or online banking or online gaming, they are explicitly talking about generative AI services. These data centers aren't useful for anything else.

Which is what makes this bubble so destructive. When this scam economy goes tits up all these data centers are nothing but scrap. At least the railroads gave us infrastructure, the dot com bubble built out fiber networks we use today.

I've been wondering, what does make them useless for other things? They would still be a huge destructive waste not worth the "at least making infrastructure" justification I imagine, but them being outright useless for anything else surprises me, in my limited understanding of this kind of tech.

What is the compute (in terms of Watt) per LLM user, and what is the compute in terms of being able to train current and next generation LLMs? Very unclear whether the size of the data centers is set by number of potential users, or its ability to train and run current and future models!

My take though is that if they build a .5 gigawatt data center, the requirement should be that they build .6 gigawatts of solar, don't take any government handouts, pay their taxes, and follow normal accounting and business ethics/judgment rules. If that's in place, I see no issue.

100% correct. Everybody that is surfing this bubble is still pushing the b.s. angle that AI is only a small driver of demand and that most is still cloud and other services. Which we all know to be horse s@#t.

Also Amazon Web Services did have a large outage fairly recently and uh, yeah, it wasn't great but the world didn't fucking collapse or anything.

Wild for them to try to run defense for these things when we can literally see the effects of the xAi one in Memphis. People are on pace for the most severe health problems so that people can argue with and sext with Grok.

The same reasons that Ai companies don't want people to know the difference in basic algorithms and LLMs. They also don't want you to know the difference between servers running your bank accounts, and their ai farm data centers.

Up until AI, MS and AWS were making real gains in data center efficiency. Which makes total economic sense--it's one of your biggest expenses as a cloud providers. Then magic word guessers happened.
