I don't know what we need to do to stop the rise of fascism But I think that if a bunch of people do what they think will help, eventually someone will find the right answer So if you have an idea to try and help, go for it! We need lots of people trying lots of things if we're going to make it

They took Ilhan’s PASSPORT?! Um

Pat Thompson@pattho.bsky.social

DHS investigators not only took Ilhan’s cell phone, they took her computers, notebooks and her passport! These seem like important details. (You can tell who doesn’t read the full Wall Street Journal article: me.)

I wish people would stop making articles and posts that are like "MAGA is furious about {whatever}." Their default state is to be mad about everything. It's not difficult to make them mad and it's not notable when it happens.

Yesterday I was at the Tate Modern in London and saw Rothko's Seagram murals that they have there. And holy shit these might be the best paintings I've ever seen. 1/

Abstract art is often criticized with "my kid could paint that", but for these that is objectively untrue. Rothko kept his exact techniques secret (we know glue was involved), and no one has been able to replicate it.

If you ever get the opportunity, you've got to see these paintings. The Tate Modern in London is free, and several other paintings in the same series are in museums all over the world.

If you stand as close as possible, allowing the painting to consume your vision, and you relax your eyes a little, it starts to move. The subtle brush strokes and textures start shifting, and the painting looks like its coming towards you, enveloping you. Consuming you.

This is not an experience unique to me. There was a tour guide in the room who encouraged people to stand close, without prompting what they'd experience. Multiple people, unprompted, described the same thing

The experience really cannot be conveyed over the internet. First is the scale. The room has 7 of these massive paintings. They consume the space, filling it with a sense of unease. But where they get really cool is when you stand closer.

Why the hell is the MN unemployment website only available Sunday-Friday!?! I was trying to do my taxes, but I need a document from that site!?! This is asinine, websites don't need days off!!!

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Please stop platforming Minneapolis’ piss boy mayor. Every tragedy, he emerges from some downtown gutter to cry on national television that only he should be able to murder the people of Minneapolis with zero consequences. He alone controls our police force. If he wanted ICE gone, they’d be gone.

TypeScript is a psychology experiment designed to see if you can read "the JavaScript API you know and love, but with the safety of strong typing!" and get so distracted by how much you like strongly typed languages that you forget that you do not, in fact, neither know nor love the JavaScript API

charlie kirk died for what he believed in. in a very literal sense: he believed in a world where gun deaths are inevitable and the solution to problems is violence. he excused his own death years before it happened. and if anyone else had been killed he'd already be weaponizing and relativizing it.

I found this study on how people view AI, and it turns out the general public fucking hates it. Tech companies are spending so much money on something that most people don't like. It's all so dumb. Link: www.pewresearch.org/internet/202...

pewresearch.orgHow the U.S. Public and AI Experts View Artificial IntelligenceThese groups are far apart in their enthusiasm and predictions for AI, but both want more personal control and worry about too little regulation.

the guy in the snapdragon commercial who uses ai to generate a bedtime story to tell his kids demonstrates that ai is really useful for inventing new and astonishing ways to be a loser

People imagine picking up and finding *something better* is an easy solution. But how is that supposed to work, when all your time and energy goes to staying alive? You have almost nothing to set aside to actually fight your way out.

A parachutist in the Netherlands missed the target sports field and landed in the monkey enclosure at the local zoo. The director of the zoo remarked: "he got lucky, a hundred meters further and he'd have landed amidst the lions". Everyone involved, human or not, was OK.
