When I read 500 billion and didn't read it was a cooperation between Microsoft/Google/Amazon or something I knew this was bullshit. Dunno why I'm reading headlines saying "Trump invests 500 billion into AI!" No way do OpenAI and Softbank even get close to a 100 billion for this.

Oh my god, this is completely ridiculous. OpenAI will raise another $19bn in debt/equity? This company loses $5bn+ a year! So what, they raise $19bn for Stargate, then what, another $10bn just to be able to survive? Do I really have to talk about this with a straight face?

I know private equity is dumb as fucking bricks but where are they actually drumming this money up from? This isn't 2018 with zero percent interest rates, investment money is actually expensive these days.

I have no idea if DeepSeek R1 is what it appears to be. But if it is, it potentially puts at risk hundreds of billions of dollars in investments by OpenAI and others. The AGI pyramid is showing cracks. The risk is that the entire ‘scaling is everything’ approach could soon crumble.

Too much stupid money around. The Tech companies are pouring billions upon billions into AI, which will hit short & medium term earnings with having any clue about whether they can make any money from selling products in the future. If widespread job losses occur, who will have $$ to buy th produc

Ed, I occasionally tease Molly Conger for the suffering she endured for the sake of creating content. But you being forced to constantly monitor the hilarious saga of OpenAI may be the closest to a Promethean “having your liver devoured daily” scenario I’ve ever seen another person experience.

You've gotta spend money to lose money. This is simple business school shit. They've got it in all the textbooks next to "every purchase is a sale" and "profit = revenue - costs"

Small detail, I know, but why the fuck did they name it Stargate, it isn't a gate and seems to have nothing to do with stars or space or Kurt Russell

Probably the same way Musk keeps stealing names from commons SciFi (and probably then trademarks them). If they can't come up with a good idea, they'll at least steal the name of something cool someone genuinely creative came up with.

So, $38B. That amount of money could instead be spent to reduce America's current energy usage by about 12 Gigawatts which is ~65% of the power produced by the Three Gorges Dam. Instead, it's going to be used to build machines that consume water and electricity at unsustainable rates.

After many decades they finally found a third thing we're allowed to spend government money on besides corn subsidies and the military. Schooling is still a pie in the sky thing, ofc.

When I breezed past this headline on the way to the ten thousand other headlines this week I mistakenly thought openai was RECEIVING that money. I thought that that was sad, but this is fucken bonkers in a what the shit salad.

Can’t build out the renewable energy to run the damn stuff, but they can put it on our backs to sacrifice our energy security and fresh water for them? Very few jobs. They like that. Less human mess, more profit. But we will pay.

Is this why they’re proposing to buy crypto with the gold reserves? Then they can use the gold to fund this shit? Can I make a prediction? DOGE will bankrupt America by investing all the tax dollars in AI.

The OpenAI people asked OpenAI "How much money do we have" and OpenAI replied with "$19 billion dollars and six rummage apple sardine rolling." They ignored the second bit since that's obviously wrong data.
