now that IGF voting is winding down I can say that there are not one but TWO really impressive, really good deduction games coming out in the near future. generally a very big moment for the genre but some of the work being done is extremely impressive

I am genuinely astonished at the rapidity with which incremental deduction has gone from "an idea Lucas Pope made a really good game with" to "an idea that's been explored somewhat" to "full blown genre" to "kind of *the* genre interesting work is being done in"

The path from obra dinn as a cool but heady and difficult and hard to replicate thing To golden idol, a pulpy paperback novel of a game Anyone can do, mass marketable to "oh we've figured out a way to make Mystery Games everyone is in on this" has been genuinely astonishing to eatch

One game is Funeral for the Sun, which has the genius premise of Roottrees-esque genealogy deduction but with a Latin American, magical realist setting. But it's more than just a single clever idea; I think the time I spent with it only scratched the surface. store.steampowered.com/app/4088360/...

The other is Inkblood, which... jesus just go look at this steam page and look at what this game looks like, and then please understand that the screenshots don't really convey what this looks like in motion, nor do they include the sickest stuff in it store.steampowered.com/app/4114100/...

store.steampowered.comInkblood on SteamYou're an Inquisitor following a trail of death. A cult is at work, your predecessor has vanished, and the region teeters on the edge of chaos. Find the truth. Uphold the Inquisition. Do not fail.

Inkblood is a take on Golden Idol that takes diegetic UI to the most delightful extremes, set in a comically-horrid-fantasy setting that feels redolent of weird alt-animation, classic book illustrations, and 256-color era graphics.

aww too bad it's being published by one of the worst publishers in video games. the sex pest shit is bad, but it gets soooo much worse with them :(

Cool to see Inkblood here. Worked on it back at Critical Reflex, so it's close to my heart. Also had a feeling Funeral for the Sun was worth watching, and you've confirmed it. Did Burn With Me caught your eye? We submitted it to IGF too. Curious what you think

I love these games, Roottrees is a goty for me. Do you know or want to post some good write-ups of the genre as it's been developing? I'm super curious to learn more.
