FOLKS WE DID IT ✅ I'm typing this on @aviva.gay's deer.social ✅ which posted to @alnkq.bsky.social's AppViewLite ✅ which is listening to the @blacksky.app atproto.africa relay

pretty damn close to a 100% top-to-bottom bluesky-free bluesky ✅ indie pds (lots) ✅ indie relay (mine + others now!) ✅ indie jetstream (mine + many more (optional)) 🌀 indie appview (AppViewLite has some issues, @futur.blue's should work, more in progress) ✅ indie client (@aviva.gay's deer.social !)

What would happen if I were to set my PDS' PDS_BSKY_APP_VIEW_URL to your AppViewLite? I've never fully understood how that works lol

my local deer social, can't resolve the locally running appview. Is the api running under a different port than the little web app it comes with?

if you're on a bluesky app and reading it, i think the short version is: it means bluesky is an open/interoperable social network every piece of infrastructure i used to make that post was running independently from bluesky!

Oh my goodness So I can literally make an instance out of Bluesky independently from Bluesky servers? Just like Mastodon? If so that's neat, I really liked Fediverse related stuff but didn't knew where to start

yeah! bluesky (/atproto) focuses on making your PDS (personal data server) really really easy to self-host and easy to migrate. you own your data. the rest (relays, appviews, clients) work well as shared community infrastructure, not everyone has to run their own. you're free to move around :)

why sign up, when you can take your identity with you? anyway steps here (still ultra jank but we’re so close):

you can repro! custom-appview.deer-social.pages.dev/profile/did:... under settings -> deer -> custom appview did, enter: did:web:appview.bad-example.com lots still broken (just need to repair the xrpc endpoints), but you should be able to open that direct link after setting the appview ^^

On it 🫡

Apparently my account is now on my own self-hosted PDS 🎉 This was not easy, but every step made sense and seemed robust. It was much less scary than I thought. The only bug I could spot is in the client app: If still logged in on the Bluesky mushroom PDS, the account will hang (no logout button).

Am I being an idiot here? Trying to get my AppViewLite working with @tokimeki.blue, but its just... not. Doing the proxy as "did:web:bsky.zio.blue#bsky_appview", and then nothing is loading after that. Not sure if I missed something, or AVL has issues with Tokimeki?

spent a couple days trying to figure out whats wrong with appviewlite with non-appviewlite clients but last night i saw that fix of yours and it finally got my appviewlite deployment working with klearsky, thank you!

Thank you. So what you did demonstrates that anyone can build a client using the at protocol, meaning that if bluesky gets killed or someone buys the company, other social apps using the at protocol wouldn’t be affected? Is this turning Bluesky more like Mastodon?

previously* to access bluesky (the microblogging platform) you were reliant on Bluesky (the company) for the client, appview, and relay with this, you get access to the *same* bluesky microblogging platform as everyone else but through an independent client, appview, and relay

hi! it’s early and not in a state that’s easy to plug and play, but my ansible playbooks might help you get started: github.com/at-microcosm... some of it’s a little broken or behind. also if you haven’t set up your own PDS, that would be a great place to start, much more established path
