Francesca Hong was asked last night by Kaitlin Collins if she still believes Thanksgiving should be canceled. Her answer was not 'no.'

Gee, this question - posed to the Democratic front-runner for Governor of Wisconsin - seems a little low-priority considering all of the other issues and opportunities our state faces. But hey, Kaitlin has to get those clicks, eh?

If she taught a basic political science class in American elections, it would be titled “how to lose votes 101.” That’s a classic whiff of a softball question.

As a nation we need to put forth the person most likely to succeed in winning against MAGA. Right now it's about survival. Francesca Hong isn't going to cut it in a fight against MAGA. Pick someone else.

She's the front runner in the polls, but there's somewhere around 30% undecided. David Crowley has raised the most money. Not a done deal, no matter what the media says. The primary is August 11th.

All in the replies, shrugging and saying who cares are totally missing the point. The point is *who* cares. No one in their right mind “cares.” So why in the hell would a *serious* candidate for GOVERNOR make such a ridiculous statement. The attack ads write themselves She seems like an idiot.

The fact it seems like she's standing up for native Americans does not seem like a *negative* for her campaign I don't have any other way to frame that It's about respect

I like Kaitlin Collins but I would like it if she would stick to pertinent questions and not just BS right wing talking points. There are bigger fish to fry here aren't there? What are we doing this is stupid

Her being unable to say, something to the effect of: “No, we shouldn’t cancel thanksgiving, cmon. We were all locked up in our apts in 2020 and sometimes we’d say ‘out there’ things, but no, cmon, be real” isn’t a BS right wing taking point.

I think you're out of touch and probably need a hug, too angry about things that don't matter. I don't be grudge it because I've been there

Is this a bit? You follow 11K people and said something non-responsive but with therapy speak. I’m guessing a bot because no actual human being could defend canceling Thanksgiving by alleging the complaining party is out of touch.

Emotional issues get more eyeballs. That's my presumption about the reason *that* question was asked. I imagine things will get a lot worse in this regard if/when the Paramount deal to acquire WB/Discovery goes through.

Hong could just respond by saying: 'Thanksgiving is great, I don't want to cancel it, let's talk about something real now.' This isn't hard.

Why are you framing it like this is an issue the base cares about? Smells like engagement bait. Seems to be working. Why are people not allowed to opt out of holidays? Why aren't we asking if everyone else endorses colonialism??

I wish republicans paid even 1/100th the attention to things the President has said just in the past week as they do for one random pandemic tweet from a primary gubernatorial candidate. The outrage is actually hilarious.

"No I don't, and I deleted the post because I was wrong." "I believe in the holiday as a time for family gatherings and giving thanks to your Creator, is a valuable one. But I also believe that we should abandon the racist, anti-Indigenous mythology behind it."

All she has to do is say her views have evolved, and does not believe in abolish police/prisons/etc and she'd be golden. But nope, WI dems constantly kick themselves in the crotch because they have absolutely no commonsense

Mayflower descendant here. I stopped participating when I discovered that fact about my family tree (on both sides). But that doesn't give me the right to tell other people what they can or can't celebrate. It would be great if people could lead by example instead of running their mouths.

Every one of these people need media training. The same people that claim that moderate Dems are elitist are sounding like the most elitist of all. Learn how to communicate outside your circle of friends at the coffee shop.

How could she be asked about this? She wouldn't have the authority to do this. It's a real "Do you still beat your wife?" kinda question.

Not going to unmute this, but will say there's a reason I don't watch CNN, it's garbage like this. Don't know Francesca Hong ,don't care what she believes about Thanksgiving and this is not news. What is the relevance of this to her running for public office?

Fuck it. Cancel Christmas too. If we can get decent medical care, education, & wages in return, you can have em. Shit, I’ll prance around the may pole with all the commies if they pull off this shit.

Thanksgiving is what you make of it. Having quite a small, yet diverse family, Thanksgiving in our house has often been an opportunity to welcome new and old friends from places near and far to share a meal and some good company. It's about the least commercial holiday we have as Americans.

I think her points are valid -Some Americans (First People) take exception to Thanksgiving -Viewpoints evolve -Conversation around a dinner table is important (kids have no idea today) -Coming together wins My family came to Boston in 1635. 53 on The Planter. Tday was important to “them”.

How true. Our real relation to Native Americans at that time consisted of behavior such as "Come on over and have a bite to eat with us. We have some blankets to give you (that are infected with smallpox, hahaha!)."

I just listened to it—it's a pretty bad example of political communication. Overly rehearsed while also being evasive. At least start with "No, of course not." Then go on from there and explain what you were talking about originally.

That's basically where I am with it. And I'm no stranger to writing dumb shitposts on social media that are based in some but aren't intended to be enlightening. Hell, I've written a few today. I'm also not running for anything. Were I, I'd have to explain better than she did

Please note that she has not said Wisconsin should cancel the nine-day deer hunting season that includes Thanksgiving. As someone who was raised on a Wisconsin farm, I can tell you that’s what would really cost her votes.

Are we forced to celebrate Thanksgiving? I know people who use the long weekend to get together w/fam & never mention Thanksgiving, turkeys, or pies. On the other hand, cancel a no-gift-giving, food centric holiday with football on TV? In America? Good luck with that.

Francesca Hong is currently leading the primary, but has virtually no chance of winning the general election. She is leading with 38%, while the remaining 62% of Democratic voters are split among the other candidates or are uncommitted. It's a big problem. www.wisconsinrightnow.com/francesca-ho...

wisconsinrightnow.comFrancesca Hong Almost Had An Anxiety Attack Being Around 'Old White People' At Culvers, And Other NewsLikely Democratic Party nominee Francesca Hong was on the “verge” of an anxiety attack at a Black River Falls Culvers because there were too many “old white

I live in Madison, WI, so I have a bit of insight on the ground here. The latest Marquette poll from July 22nd has Tiffany leading Hong 43% to 40%. It's a Democratic year, and as such, she should be ahead at the start of the campaign, not behind, especially since the attacks have not even started.

Like, I am a (practicing) atheist, but I still love Xmas and Thxgiving. The Puritans abolished Xmas bc they thought all should live by their religious precepts. IMO, that is a right wing position.

i mean thanksgiving is a pretty racist holiday in theory, but worse case we should just rename it to something unrelated, like we did with the other holiday that celebrated the same oppression

Feasts of thanksgiving are a broader category, an unobjectionable (here xtian) tradition, so the name need not be changed to deal with that honest objection, racism, imo. People will interpret the history however they want. The other holiday was named after a monster, and I did not celebrate it

Thanksgiving has long been my favorite holiday because it's nonsecular and you can choose with whom you celebrate. I've been giving thanks with friends and nonrelatives I love for years. How intellectually inflexible is Hong that she doesn't get that.

If you don’t like Thanksgiving, that’s fine. If you think it’s offensive or misbegotten, I disagree, but you’re entitled to your opinion. But Thanksgiving is not “an incredibly painful time” for anybody alive in 2026, and if someone tells you that it is, they’re lying.

People in the comments who say this is no big deal are highlighting their privilege. In America, this is the only holiday some people actually get off. Not Christmas or Labor Day. Yeah I wish it were different but it ain't.

We cancelled Thanksgiving years ago when it became a “holiday” for men to be waited on and no one offering to help clean up. Pretty wasteful holiday. Guys LOVE it though. 😆

I’m not sure I understand this angle. I get being vocal about the whitewashing of American history and setting it straight but this makes no sense. Also, why is the focus on this one thing and not her platform? I have no idea who she is or what she stands for.

She has a point. Whites came to this land in ships from a foreign place and were welcomed and treated well by the indigenous population. Whites have been at war with those indigenous people ever since. What are we celebrating?

'Painful' is a bit much. As for the day itself, only the most culty are actually thanking their skygod. Most just want good food and to pig out. Of course, a SECULAR Thanksgiving is one where you thank real people for good actions, kindnesses, etc..

This is silly. Nobody is cancelling anything. Obviously Francesca Hong and her family are entirely free to not celebrate Thanksgiving, and there are valid reasons for them to choose that, but if she’s the governor the state isn’t going to, like, arrest anyone for serving a turkey. 🙄

Important or not, this is the kind of thing that gets you steamrolled outside of Madison and I’m pretty sure most people here would give this a 🤨 as well.

I would. I think it's a stupid holiday, and I'm not sure anyone really likes it beyond the food. All I hear is people complaining that they have to spend time with relatives they don't like or the political fights or the "what's wrong with you" discussions.

Replies in this post are just moronic. Nowhere does she say yes, cancel Thanksgiving. If she’s native, don’t expect her to accept the bullshit narrative that Americans have given Thanksgiving.

To start culture war bullshit to get moderates pissing their pants about shit that doesn't matter, as displayed in this entire thread. She can't abolish Thanksgiving, she probably wouldn't even if she could, and nobody has to agree with everyone on everything. Dems need to lock the fuck in

"This loony lefty tweeted years ago that Thanksgiving sucks!! She'll never win!!" People are dying in concentration camps in the US right now, Marco Rubio is trying to arrest people for opinions, the world is on fucking fire, and these dorks wanna howl at the moon about thanks fuckin giving

She could say the reason we ACTUALLY celebrate thanksgiving when we do- to be thankful that Meade and Grant kicked confederate ass I’m the summer of 1863. The pilgrim nonsense was to make southerners feel better.

It's wild to explicitly call it culture war bullshit, to accurately note that they whine about this stuff endlessly no matter what progressives say, and then to pretend this makes a difference. You are just reproducing the culture war bullshit.

Who fucking cares? Does this personal position make my groceries cheaper? fill my tank for less? Why the fuck do I care? I don't. People are allowed to have opinions. Even elected officials. We don't have to agree with all of them.

Francesca Hong has a lot of Native American voters she would be representing, and they have been turning out for Wisconsin Dems. And they have different feelings about Thanksgiving. A Dem being responsive to the feelings of her constituents is being deemed "wackadoo" per some of the comments here.

Say ‘No’. And make the basic calculation that you’ll turn off a much higher number of voters, and distract from the issues you want to talk about, by giving such a non answer.

Nobody is ever going to cancel Thanksgiving no matter how many times they say it just like Trump is not running in 2028 so why do they say stupid things who knows.

American journalism at its finest. Taking on the pressing issues facing the electorate. I hope Collins was able to nail Hong down on the "Is Santa Claus" white debate currently tearing our country apart. Collins is a true Beltway professional- if she would only smile more.

She could've answered this much better but it's more an example of media misdirection. This is not a serious issue, & not at all defining of the DSA, but will be laundered as such because the goal is to reduce the DSA to a caricature. And to instil fear so voters continue choosing corrupt assholes.

Hong's overt racism and her lying to her child aren't the most disturbing aspects of this tweet. She believes that she knows what random strangers around her are thinking - that's delusional - and that they are thinking negatively about her, which is deeply paranoid. Hard pass on Hong.
