My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

even abstracted into hypothetical maths this doesn't make any sense. picking the lesser evil still makes things more evil, just by a lesser amount

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

It is, fundamentally, an exercise of choosing the lesser evil, over and over and over again, so that the total amount of evil in the system decreases over time. And you must keep doing it, because - since evil is easy - good is easily reversed.

Good example of bullshit in the technical sense of a disregard of truth. This is based on a misunderstanding of statistical sampling, but that doesn't matter. Polling, to them, is not a measure of reality. It is part of the narrative. If it tells a story they don't like, it must be attacked.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "When I'm in these big arenas, I ask for hands -- 'Show me your hand if you've answered a poll in the last six months.' There will be like three hands among 300 people. I'm telling you, these polls are off. All of them."

I am getting into game dev, and some would say this is the worst time to do that. My theory is that these people put very little effort into it. It is not hard to stand out above 70% of it. This was already true with asset swaps, and is more so now.

Casey S. Pumpkins πŸŽƒ@caseyexplosion.bsky.social

I wrote this as a parody of the kind of thing I saw some slopware "developers" saying and I wish I could say this was a wild exaggeration, but the amount of games in my inbox where the AI disclosure was a god damn manifesto... They're so angry that people don't want to play games they didn't make.

The other way it goes is that there's a firestorm of new vulnerabilities over the next few months, but then it calms down as the models find everything they're capable of finding. Those models are integrated as part of the CI/CD pipeline for release, and new software is stronger for it.

Protect girls sports: At least one trans kid per team or automatic disqualification. Let's move that overton window baby.

we should all be pissed off at this btw. if not because sex work is legitimate work and should be treated with respect, then because you should be concerned at attempts to gentrify online spaces as pretext to court investors and force out minorities so those spaces can become part of a portfolio.

This might be one of the few times I'm OK with describing it as "slams". Ramaswamy deserves it, and in the strongest possible language.

Eric Michael Garcia@ericmgarcia.bsky.social

Amy Acton's brother slams Vivek Ramaswamy featuring her estranged mother in a campaign ad. "This desperate, disgusting attack reveals exactly who Vivek Ramaswamy is at his core – a pathetic excuse for a man who is willing to hurt anyone as long as it gets him what he wants."

That is quite clearly true. You see it every time you develop a new skill. So if you invest all your energy in organising and electioneering within the existing system - you'll become really good... at using that system and only that system. It will become your main tool.

Artists don't need to be miserable, depressed people to be great. That is a toxic myth. But art does need to be miserable and painful and scary at points to be good. There's no shortcut.

There's this thing I've noticed from people who have manipulative personality types. They say a whole bunch of bullshit where you can't get a word in, and then end it off with a question that nobody could disagree with. You're forced to say "yes" as if you agreed with every part. This right here:

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

RFK Jr: They want to be strong, vigorous, young, Americans men. And what's wrong with that? WILL CAIN: Without giving you a gratuitous compliment, you've been a walking billboard for that

it's almost as if just letting monopolies dominate the landscape in a country too corrupt to enforce antitrust law or have functional regulators is hugely detrimental, and the solution is a lot more community-owned and operated local infrastructure

Aaron Swartz was something of the last of the spirit of the 90s Internet inside the larger tech space. The people who believed the Internet could be a force for democratizing information and power. Despite it all, I still believe it can be if we make better choices.

Fuck Blue No Matter Who

Aleksandra Vaca@transiticsnews.com

Colorado & Michigan have become the latest blue states to end Medicaid coverage for trans youth. Solidly blue Colorado will also be IMMEDIATELY shutting off care for all trans kids receiving puberty blockersβ€”despite Trump's rule allowing a 6 month β€˜tapering’ period. This is a complete betrayal.

They put it on the airport where all the politicians come and go? Maybe we should just let them have this one.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez@ocasio-cortez.house.gov

The FAA rolled out a new AI tool for air traffic control in DC without publishing a safety evaluation or sufficiently consulting labor. @repaprildelaney.bsky.social and I are urging the FAA to stop the rollout until we have answers. Air traffic control leaves zero margin for error.

In general, people have really bad knowledge of how cults work. It's a problem that goes beyond Trump and MAGA. Everyone will, at some point, hit life circumstances where they would be potentially susceptible to cult control. Everyone.

But he made a few low effort shit posts against Trump. We must flock to vote for the bar laying on the floor.

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

I'm convinced Newsom isn't running for President at all. Sure, he might have a committee and use it as a slush fund, but he's running to be appointed to corporate boards and fake think tanks and stuff. Just too many examples of him going out of his way to show he's not aligned with the Dem base.

"Just come here the legal way" was always light years easier said than done; now they aren't even in the same galaxy.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

A few weeks ago, US Citizenship and Immigration Services released quarterly data on the legal immigration system through June. The data presents a stark picture of an agency going through a period of total dysfunction. As of June, net application backlogs have risen by 80% since Trump took office.

We're not suffering a breakdown of the social fabric because we've lost the ability to have reasonable disagreements with each other; we've lost the ability to have reasonable disagreements because some people are trying to deliberately rend the social fabric.
