municipal and cooperative energy utilities have also been at the forefront of deploying community-owned gigabit fiber networks at prices much better than the local telecom monopoly

Since 2020, electricity bills have risen 34% for customers of investor-owned utilities, but only 19% for customers of publicly owned utilities. Nuking the IOU model & making all distribution utilities publicly owned: people are saying.

it's almost as if just letting monopolies dominate the landscape in a country too corrupt to enforce antitrust law or have functional regulators is hugely detrimental, and the solution is a lot more community-owned and operated local infrastructure

one of my clients is the Institute For Local Self Reliance, where I talk to multiple different municipalities every week doing all sorts of amazing shit the broader press (with occasional and welcome exception) couldn't give two shits about

in part because infrastructure just doesn't get those sweet ad engagement clicks, but also because corporate media ownership clearly isn't all too keen on progressive alternatives to consolidated corporate power
