so here is the thing...there really are only two explanations for this and I would hope neither would be sufficient to his base. 1) He is blatently lying and assuming everyone is too dumb to realize it, or 2) His Christian "faith" is such a sham that he doesn't recognize a depiction of Jesus Christ

Those two alternatives (and the exclusivity of them) presume that Trump operates like a normal human, in which everything he says is grounded in some meaning, and is therefore to be interpreted as either true or false. I don't think anything he says or does is so grounded.

He doesn't need to come up with a convincing lie. All he needs to do is to come up with something that gives his supporters plausible deniability as to why they should continue supporting him. These people accepted "I declassified documents with my mind", that's how low the bar is.
