yes it’s a big mystery why people who think empathy is evil don’t become therapists

The idea that conservative ideology should be equally represented in everything is ironically a very liberal idea

It's like the "why aren't their any prominent conservative science professors?" Because conservatives have systematically rejected science over the past 30 or so years. Someone who doesn't believe in climate change/evolution isn't getting a job teaching about the climate or biology.

This whole hysteria on the right about under representation of cons in academia drives me crazy. It is endogenous and self selecting. Free inquiry into the liberal arts is inherently left coded. Material rewards are lacking. Why go into academic STEM when you could make more money in industry, etc?

Where did those statistics come from? There are a lot of faith-based counselors these days whose ideology could hardly be considered 'liberal.' It's a problem for people who want secular help. Also, how are they defining the term 'liberal'?

I don't even think this Michelle Tandler stat is true. Where did she get this from, anyway? Catholic/Evangelical/LDS culture is awash in "Christian counseling" services, which is supposed to offer "faith-based" therapy. It's very right-wing, often abusive. It's just bullshit vibe-whining.

For get that a conservative therapist would be ineffective... Conservatives will do anything, up to and including becoming president and starting a global conflict in order to avoid going to a therapist. Fred Trump didn't love Donny unconditionally, so now we have to deal with all this bullshit.

Could it be because all the male conservative therapists just become preachers/clergy? Nah, that can't be it. *Eye roll* Regardless, they were always going to come for the mental health crowd. It's part of the playbook.

There are no conservative male therapists because conservative men fucking despise emotions. They believe being anything other than a cold, unfeeling machine is a sign of weakness. Hence why their wives keep leaving them

My wife is a therapist, she is liberal and white so those numbers check out. Therapist don’t go into their line of work expecting to make money. They may have gone into it because they suffered trama in their life and they want to help others. These are all things conservatives dislike

If I wanted to talk to a conservative woman who'd only half listen to me, belittle my views & perspective, and try to talk me into "fixing" myself by ironing out all of the Weird Quirky Queer an Artistic aspects of myself For My Own Good, I'd call my mom

Ya I have a hard time picturing anyone who belongs to a cult of pain and cruelty making it all the way through the education required to become a therapist without snapping at a teacher/professor and being expelled...

I sometimes look at Politico’s “Cartoon Carousel” & they do a fair and balanced thing w equal numbers of left and right views, except there just aren’t many right-wing cartoonists, so they always give *two* cartoons to the one right-winger Ramirez. Some professions skew non-right for a reason.

I'm still not super clear on this person's argument. Complaining they're mostly liberal, they're mostly women and they're mostly white... If someone was gonna complain about something being too diverse or not diverse enough, why would they complain about all three?

Right wing therapist telling you depresion is woke propaganda and that finding a job and stopping being lazy will solve my mental issues and "man up"

The initial four years of school that it takes to get to the graduate level degree often moves young people to the center or left...through education. They mostly can't get there and remain conservative. It takes going to a conservative school that eschews knowledge and science for dogma.

this is probably the most confusing thing ive seen all week. how do you hear the things people are saying at these protests and get scared?? how do you get scared by a SCARF??

You can tell that conservatives don't really think, because anyone with half a brain who spends more than 30 seconds thinking about this would realize why a profession that requires you to have an education and care about people and their feelings would skew this way.

As a therapist/psychologist, the ideas of the modern conservatism & maga are fundamentally opposed to basically all of therapy/psychology. It would be like asking “Why aren’t there more goldfish climbing Mt Everest?”

Conservatives literally disrespect therapists regularly, and discourage kids from getting degrees in social sciences like psychology. The conservatives that do get those degrees are some of the worst people you'll ever meet, because they gaslight & manipulate A LOT!

I am not even kidding, that is my mom’s ex boyfriend. I hated him. (Okay it was actually a “you can offend me, I can take it” or something like that shirt that he had custom printed for when I visited! But the spirit is there)

Because conservative “therapists” usually are unqualified: ministers, pastors. They don’t seek actual higher education for it. Also, I don’t know about psychologists, but I’m currently in grad school for my MSSW to become an LCSW. Social work puts social justice at the forefront. They hate that.

Once again, I have to ask what is the actual problem here? Are conservatives being denied access jobs or clients? Are “woke” licensing boards not giving them credentials? What’s the ideal solution? Quotas? Forcing conservatives to become therapists? Require working therapists to vote democrat?

Therapy is a means whereby you help others. To learn how to help requires curiosity and empathy. To secure the education requires money. The money issue could explain the race disparity, and the empathy and curiosity explains the sex disparity. Wanting to help others explains why so many liberals

It’s not as if conservative ideology literally says it’s immoral to not make as much money as you can. People who believe that tend not to go into helping professions.

I did actually have one during part of the first year of COVID. She was very dismissive of my pandemic concerns as a disabled person and played it off as me being a control freak when I was stressed because my roommates at the time were taking zero precautions and didn't think the pandemic was real.

Thank you, but I'm alright. I am well-practiced at firing crappy therapists. At the time it was more "Well. That explains a lot." and I felt better knowing, because it made sense of the really weird situation. I contacted the telehealth agency and got transferred to somebody else.

I am glad you paid attention and used your voice. I know that sounds all therapist-ie, but it’s really true. So often we are told to ignore our gut, or even ignore obviously bad experiences. Taking a stand and saying no, this is not ok; for me, or even ethically/professionally, is to be applauded.

I didn't find out she was conservative until I was like "I'm getting a REALLY weird vibe here" and went to Google to look for reviews to see if other people had bad experiences. What popped up instead was her voter registration and some pro-Trump statements she'd made.

Aside from demographic data for access to higher ed, there's also the point that "conservative therapists" are often just men who are members of whatever church said they could be a counselor or "advisor" of some sort, and they use the church and religion to abuse and gaslight members as "therapy".

Same for artists, actors, and creatives. The good ones possess empathy. That’s the current political dividing line, not just here, worldwide— those who possess empathy vs. those who do not. It’s almost that simple, and it’s why it’s so incredibly frustrating to be in this current Age of Assholes.

In any discussion of the right's disdain for empathy, I am reminded that U.S. Army Capt. Gustav M. Gilbert, a psychologist at Nuremberg who interviewed and studied the Nazi war criminals on trial, said, "Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy."
