this feels like it's true in spirit but dramatically falls apart when you are married to someone and have mutual obligations. we share bank accounts, residence, and debts. I can see anything he buys and am responsible for it. that's what marriage is. we are not legally distinct entities anymore.

It saw a post and it doesnt want to point out who, but they said you should know your spouses phone password. Just for the record if your partner or spouse ever asks for passwords its time to leave them if its safe to do so. Under no circumstances should you ever give them your passwords/pin codes

I would never demand a password to any account or device, and that is certainly a red flag, but I need to be able to continue paying rent and addressing our mutual, shared, legally indistinct financials. I don't need to exercise power of attorney to do this, nor is that desirable for either of us?

this will be even more acute when we have kids together. like seriously, this man has my social security number. he is obligated to give it in order for me to have health insurance. we have shared accounts. we are both on this lease. it would be *very* cost/time consuming to dissolve this union.

if you don't consent to your financial and legal obligations being closely tied like this then you *really* should not marry someone, and you certainly should not have kids with them. obviously you can be a controlling partner! and that does happen. I don't think you should *demand* things.

but if you're married, you are now in a situation where someone acting autonomously is no longer legally distinct from you. it's a big deal & it's why you should seriously consider if you want this before marrying someone. you're not going to have a great time being married if you refuse to combine.

it's just a very weird set of priorities imo. like, my wife spent a few nights caring for our daughter alone when i was at a conference. the idea that i'd trust her with that but not with my phone passcode is… pretty wild lol

right lmao if I can't trust him to respect my privacy while also having some access to my stuff then idk what are we doing here? even when we've argued intensely I never thought he was going to go ruin me or us and if I did I would be out of here

i never had a shared bank account with my ex, which made the divorce really easy!

it's a bit of a paradox if someone doesn't want it, that increases the odds that they're safe to have it

yeah same. we've gone long past the point where what we need is a divorce if this is a concern

I don't lock my medicine cabinet out of fear of my spouse tampering with my medications. If ever I felt the need to, or felt the need to demand others not leave their prescriptions unsecured... yeah. It's not good.

Doll has been with its wife for 10 years and we have never ever had a legitemate reason to share passwords/pins or credentials.

like idk I guess I don't see why I should be concerned this man has the encryption keys to my laptop or the password to my uber account when all our expenses go through a single bank account and our birth certificates and social security cards live next to each other!

like idk this seems like you have severely, to your detriment, misunderstood the marriage contract and are equating wildly different behaviors.

No. Both doll and its wife have had previous partners who abused us and exploited that trust before. Her ex drained her bank account

like maybe I've just only dealt with immature people but like idk I could never cope with the idea that we had to find consensus on where the salt was palced in the kitchen etc and that at scale basically omg such a burden

another unmarried, childless, shrill woke crone has taken over the nix steering committee

ditto. All passwords that matter are shared, which doesn't help in practice as nobody remembers them, but still in spirit they are shared, as why wouldn't they be. If you open the wrong chrome account on the shared computer in the living room, you just squint politely before switching to yours
