Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.

software engineering is about two things: - when to use sqlite - when to use postgres

Finally back to zb development again. I've got a design I'm happy with for remote caching, and now I'm slowly rewriting the build backend to support it.

jj-domino is admittedly a bit clunkier than something like Gerrit, but after a month of iterating, I've found myself getting code checked in faster and it doesn't require reviewers to change their workflow.

The nice part is that Jujutsu's data model is rich enough to allow jj-domino to operate with basically no extra configuration beyond a GitHub access token. You don't have to think about branch names. Commit, run jj-domino, write your PR message. Done.

The gist is you swap out `jj git push -c @-` for `jj-domino -c @-` and it creates a PR for you. But! If you have multiple bookmarks in sequence, jj-domino will create PRs with a link to the stacked diff and links to related PRs, kinda like Gerrit.

xml is kiki json is bouba

Dan Hon@danhon.com

Everyone knows the real reason why json won over xml is because the latter was too pointy and the former has much better affordances because it's curvier

It's been a month since NYU Langone ended care. Letitia James deadline came and went, NYU still has not restarted care. Mamdani refuses to answer questions from trans journos over the real steps he can take, like directing H+H to absorb patients or enforcing human rights law. Important thread.

Fun fact: when I was first prototyping Wire, I called it "goose" as a pun on Guice. I don't have access to the original doc, but I believe this is the photo I included in my first writeup. Here it is: the goose/Wire goose.

Outer Wilds, if you haven't played it yet, is one of the best games of all time. It's a fun space exploration game with a timeloop twist, and 90% of all game progress happens in your head, as you learn things about the universe and your situation. Absolutely play it if you haven't yet.

PSA Outer Wilds is 50% off on Steam till Thursday! This is the biggest discount it's ever gotten; usually sales max at 40%. store.steampowered.com/app/753640/O...

Played Chants of Sennaar over the weekend. Fun little game! Loved the art, puzzles were fun, and a neat little story about connecting people.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up. I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Making smol games in Godot has been a happy place for me for the last couple years. It's really easy to bang something out, try out an idea, play with things. I'm glad making interactive art has gotten so much more accessible.

This has been a really cool year for mystery/puzzle games. I liked Blue Prince, Seance of Blake Manor, and Type Help. All of them nail their atmosphere perfectly.

I've been trying out Jujutsu for developing zb the last couple weeks. I'm impressed at how robust it is and how well it improves my workflow of lots of small, focused commits.

co-signed. a robot might be able to type rote code faster than me, but *typing speed* is not the limiting factor in my effectiveness as a software engineer, and never has been. *understanding* the code (and the pre-existing human and computational systems it interacts with) is the hard part.

I'd also identify a third position, "I see or imagine there are meaningful uses for LLMs, but that they are relatively few (not 'everything') and relatively small (+10%, not +10000%) and so may not support the cost of model building and inference or the valuation of these companies."
