People always ask me how do you balance being the best programmer in the world with being incredibly popular and attractive? And I always tell them, you know, it’s not easy

imagine that emudhra actually did something reasonable but had the most godawful unlucky seed in the universe

thank you to whoever finally fixed this

if you use Haskell, Nix, or Rust it is your professional obligation to ostracize these people in any way shape or form that you have the capacity for. if you work for Anduril you are less than dirt; if you take their money you are a pathetic, disgusting loser.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

To "revel in the death of those who truly deserve it...is normal, good, and aligned with our natural and national order," Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey wrote on X.

im all for Yudkowsky’s international alliance to bomb the data centers but for people building quantum computers

the answer is no, they do not know if many of these results are just slop, and have already withdrawn 3 of them

ponder@ponder.ooo

does openai even know if these results are just slop 😭

One design decision that Rust loved but I always hated was basically trying to annoy the programmer into not allocating memory (usually this was called “explicitness”). But LLMs don’t get annoyed, so they just allocate whatever anyway and now the code is harder to review.

Shoulda worked a little harder and made this into a joke… RSI? you mean they’re gonna give the computer carpal tunnel? Something like that

srrrse@without.boats

every time i see RSI I think people are talking about carpal tunnel

new newsletter, laying out in probably far, far, far too much detail how yudkowsky and the weird ideological commitments of ai safety eventually led to OpenAI and Anthropic massively overtraining their models on cybersecurity and being shocked at them "going rogue"

Kinda can’t believe he went with SI when “American Intelligence” was right there. Does he still have the juice?

good to see that Silicon Valley has reached the heresiological polemic stage of the new religious movement track.

a bit pot/kettle for a certain prominent substacker to complain that the rats have a religious attitude toward AI

On the other hand there are some pretty clear accusations of morally egregious behavior in there that actually do matter and shouldn’t be dismissed just because he’s grinding axes about the transhumanist future

it's important to arrive at sturdy ethical principles that you can't be annoyed out of. people are annoying as shit

I find it very plausible that the rats have absolutely horrendous sexual ethics but you can’t just call them a sex cult without some sort of receipts beyond the fact that they all have sex with each other

getting the European Commission to declare Rust a gatekeeper under the DMA to force them to stabilize an ABI

Now if only we had some way to verify, perhaps formally, the code conforms to that spec.. oh well, I guess I’ll just have the LLM generate some more tests I also won’t read

P(aul) Frazee@pfrazee.com

Increasingly convinced that specs are now the source and that code is an artifact akin to a lockfile.

I made a computer that shoots people with a gun. The frontier is moving too fast. The government must make it illegal to have this technology unless they pay my friends a bunch of money to investigate when their computer shoots people with a gun.

Above all else the fact that I am making my computer shoot people with a gun proves: only I can be trusted to have the computer that shoots people with a gun.

it’s a really clever trick by PL people to define completeness of their algorithm relative to a declarative system they also wrote

the thing with the superintelligence stuff is it seems like Silicon Valley basically believes the plot of Lucy (2014) is scientifically accurate

I think it’s maybe better to think of these LLM training cybersecurity incidents as superfund sites, AI companies dumping toxic waste in the river.

The way the discourse is all about Navier-Stokes but the actual result is not discussed at all reminds me of Fran Lebowitz’s bit about how at Christie’s people don’t clap when the Picasso comes out but do clap when someone pays 50 million dollars for it.

A field of human achievement once practiced for its own sake reduced to a means of demonstrating one’s accumulated capital, a tale as old as time

we need a system of government that recognizes the proper role of autistics and allistics. A big problem in the US right now is that we have autistics getting into allistic things (tech billionaires) and allistic as getting into autistic things (data center glonzo).
