In late June, Springer Nature sold Scientific American to LabX Media. I have since decided to step out of my role as a senior graphics editor for the magazine :: #sciart 📊 🧪 :: 🧵 [1/7]

Some features I'm quite pleased with: - angle snapping (hold shift) - vertex snapping (magnet button allows snapping to other features) - local undo/redo means you can easily go backwards if you mess up, and self-intersection detection means you can never accidentally draw an invalid geometry.

🗺️ 📣 I've been off bluesky for a while, but popping in to announce Graticule, my new app for making maps! graticule.org It's a work-in-progress but I'd love to hear any feedback. What features would you like to see next?

I've often wanted to be able to easily reference what farms are growing medicinal herbs with a focus on sustainable + regenerative practices. As a designer, I also thought it'd be fun to present that info in a searchable, interactive map. So as a side project, I created herbatlas.fyi #dataviz

herbatlas.fyiHerb AtlasHerb Atlas is an interactive map that highlights small, human-scale farms growing medicinal herbs with a commitment to sustainable farming practices.

🌟 Professional news 🌟 Today I joined @observablehq.com as a UX Designer to help build the next generation of awesome data + viz products! I've been a fan and user of Observable since the beginning, so I'm very excited to be a part of the journey and join such an inspiring team 🤗

We have the Juicy Lucy, a cheeseburger with cheese on the inside of the patty. Why? So you can get squirted in the face with boiling hot cheese on your first bite, and said cheese can then drool out onto your plate leaving you with a dry cheeseless burger!

most places in the us have a bad/boring joke food that they like to fool everyone else into thinking they like. for example louisville has the hot brown, an extremely off-putting meal no one there ever eats but tricks visitors into trying. if your community doesn't have a shitty joke food, start one

Surely this will be less popular than the dog tweet, but I've also done some Cool Work during my Twitter hiatus. Including this story about wildfire smoke that features a scrolling animated smoke map www.axios.com/us-climate-c...

What have I been up to since my Twitter hiatus? Well for starters, I obtained a miniature polar bear. She is a menace to society and I love her.

The map was composed in QGIS, using lots and lots of landcover layers, masks, and blending modes to achieve the right look. The smoke data was also styled in QGIS and exported as transparent PNGs. The whole thing is then composed like a flipbook with the smoke PNGs swapping as you scroll

This is still one of my favorite things I designed. And Jacque moving mountains to somehow get this to be responsive AND get that transition nice and smooth was the thing that really made it sing

Thanks, Eli! I learned a lot about canvas working on a project for the 2022 midterms with @albertocairo.bsky.social & @simonrogers.bsky.social, where our map had an animated transition from regular map to cartogram. SVG couldn't hang 😂 www.axios.com/midterms-ele...

🧵Okay let's do some BTS for Axios' elections #dataviz. 1/5: We used <canvas> for our big maps, which means we had to do some tricks with color hashes to get interactivity. What the reader sees vs. what the computer sees. Details on how it works: observablehq.com/@camargo/can...

With so much election #dataviz to choose from, pretty pleased to have the map I worked on for Axios included. Thinking about sharing some behind-the-scenes look at what we did, so stay tuned for that.

❄️ The U.S. is getting less snowy, according to 60 years of meteorological records. In today's Climate Lab column, see this winter’s forecast in your county and find out if it gets less snow now than it used to. Gift link: wapo.st/3CjsMaD

No contest... got millions of views on Reddit and even landed on a Fox News segment where I was labelled as a liberal elite who wants to take away your trucks 🙃 www.axios.com/ford-pickup-...

With the influx of dataviz people, let's do some re-intros. 📊 — What's your claim to fame? ✨ — How might we know you already? What have you done that we might have seen or read before? What would help us remember how we came across you? Don't be shy: it's helping us reconnect and remember you 💡

Twitter used to be my favorite thing, then some dude ruined it. I've been told this is the place to be for #dataviz and web ppl. Hoping to reconnect with old pals here :) 👋

You are up to date.
