It’s interesting that early #dataviz, like early arcade & video games, had not yet settled on standardized encoding (control) schemes. This is my favorite graphic in the post.

Information Design Conference in Hilversum, the Netherlands is coming this Friday! Here are some of my favourite historical Dutch dataviz and cartograms. attilabatorfy.substack.com/p/idc26-spec...

Grrrrrrr.

Exclusive: The historical significance of floor globes used by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II was attractive to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, people said. While moving to his office, staff lost control of the artifact and dropped it.

@BrewsterKahle@mastodon.archive.org of the Internet Archive makes the case for web preservation in The Atlantic. 🌐 Kahle explains why blocking the Wayback Machine won’t stop AI. It will only make the public record harder to preserve. Read it 👉 www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

AI Slop Design School… (Did I spend hours meticulously recreating a horrible poster just to take the piss out of it? Hell yeah I did)

Someone gave me $1,000 to build them a data-graphics library and they now have the second-best collection in San Francisco.

That feeling when you know you just had a great idea but you’re going to give a couple years of your life to it.

The case against dual axes deserves some nuance. There are different kinds: competing, mirrored, translation. I also want to add an exchange rate metaphor: put two scales on one plot and some number of right-axis units always equals one left-axis unit, whether anyone states it or not.

“A logistics guy summarized it beautifully for the WSJ – ‘chaos increases prices.’”

THE SHRUGFLATION TRIANGLE I wrote about what happens when the two biggest borrowers in the economy seemingly stop caring what money costs: (1) oil, AI, and Treasuries feeding into each other (2) who ends up paying for it (people) and (3) why nobody seems to be able to stop it

Fun locator map in Montparnasse station, Paris. Turn the whole thing and the map spins to be oriented toward the way you’re facing.

Even bigger announcement: Skeleton has won Best Paper (top 1%) at IEEE VIS this year!! 🎉 VIS is my home community and I am deeply indebted to many of the people in it. I take a little time to pontificate on what "best paper" means to me (or rather, what I think it should really be about):

frank.computerSkeleton wins best paper at IEEE VIS 2026We’ve won a best paper award. I’ll use this as an excuse to soapbox about best papers for a second.

Child mortality has declined in all world regions. In 1950, almost one in four children worldwide died before their fifth birthday. In Africa, one in three children died. The chart shows the change since then. In every region, the mortality rate of children has declined.

With both Lake Powell and Lake Mead at record-lows, here’s a look at how their water levels have varied since Powell was filled in 1980. Neither has recovered from a severe drought in the early 2020s, while Colorado River flows continue to drop. #dataviz #climate #globalwarming
