At 7:28 pm GMT tonight in 1957 at the Tyuratam Test Range in Kazakhstan, the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite—Prosteyshiy Sputnik 1 (Elementary Satellite 1)—into low-Earth orbit, shocking the United States, igniting a Cold War space & ICBM race, and spurring the creation of NASA.
The famous “ice palace” in the film Doctor Zhivago was actually made of wax, and the set was located in the Spanish desert.
We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

Just gonna repost this: You can’t “prove” anything isn’t conscious — a plant, a rock, your iPhone — but even without deeply understanding the nature of consciousness, we can say there’s no good reason to expect it to correlate with what LLMs are good at. juliansanchez.substack.com/p/dont-fall-...
yeah a lot of this debate boils down to this: "shut up, nerd, why are you making me think about this obnoxious nerd stuff, everyone already knows the real answer" the problem is that the track record of the people saying "shut up, nerd, we already know this" is, historically, pretttttttty bad

I will not only be relieved but truly *ecstatic* to be wrong, if more and better studies soon start showing that AI actually improves learning and cognitive motivation. But so far they all show the opposite, and that is consistent with the evidence that I and other educators are seeing on the ground
We are soon going to have to come to grips with the fact that this shit is asbestos for the mind
This is one of the most inane and useless threads of all time.
Again: “AIs aren’t conscious” is a strong, affirmative claim. It implies a lot of specific things about consciousness. It requires strong evidence. “We can’t say for sure if AI is conscious” is a weaker, cautious claim. It doesn’t make any particular evidence about consciousness.

Even when private foundations do a good job of supporting important work, they tend to be more narrow and rely more on networks and relationships relative to open calls and peer review. They can also be highly motivated, pushing preferred solutions and even ideologies.
Most computer models of socio-technical systems are garbage without the deep understanding of social systems that SBE provides.
NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:
Most complex problems facing the U.S. are socio-technical. Cybersecurity for example.

The Boston Red Sox have not scored a run in their last 26 postseason innings. In that time, which dates back to Game 2 of the 2025 wild card series, they are hitting .136/.183/.148 with one extra-base hit in 88 at-bats. The Yankees have shut them out through five again tonight.

This is correct - the truth value of an LLM output is essentially zero. Errors are not "hallucinations" they're probabilistic results given when the system runs out of data or has poor data. The system is performing as intended. Even at 90+% probability, that means *a lot* of answers are wrong.
A thing I learned not too long ago is that when an LLM selects a token that leads it down an incorrect path (factually), it has no way to back up, or even know that it should back up, it's just on to the next likely bit. Literally every LLM is just posting their way through it. What an image.

Joe Romm gave one of the most memorable talks I’ve ever heard at Columbia many years ago. Among other things, he said, “Sustainable development is like teenage sex. Everybody says they're doing it, very few people actually are, and those who are doing it are doing it badly.” RIP legend.
It is with tremendous sadness and sense of loss that we regretfully share the news that @penncssm.bsky.social senior research fellow, and my close personal friend Joseph Romm has passed away unexpectedly. He will be sorely missed here. web.sas.upenn.edu/pcssm/news/r...
